Mobil 1 oil filters
My 15 year old portable air compressor crapped out yesterday and while looking for a replacement at Pep Boys I saw that they stock a Mobil 1 oil filter for the XF. Curious if any one uses this filter instead of the conventional filters?
I've used them. They seem to hold up. I usually use Bosch or Mann though. If I don't use a Bosch or Mann then I can the oil filters (not the oil) about every 3k miles instead of on the oil interval.
You should have opened the box to see what brand it really is. Maybe it is a Mann reboxed like Napa does?
James
I didn't think of that James, I will check it out next time I am there. As to your other point, if I go to Napa and ask for an oil filter for the car it will be a Mann in a Napa box?
If you go to NAPA and ask for the filter by application, you will get the paper designed filter(#1226). So you must ask for 7078 which is used for the Mercedes application and it is the fleece style. Also note that another member just recently bought several of these filters and one was made in Germany, and one made in China. So you have to know what you are buying.

What is so hard about finding the filters for these cars?
(I should probably remember that I live in a major metro area with about a zillion Mercedes on the road...)
The Purolator L25277 is a repacked MANN Fleece Filter and sells for around $14 and I get them at Advance Auto. Where is the USA can you not go to Advance Auto? (I'm really asking, maybe they are not really nationwide.)
If you don't give a damn about your engine, you can use their L25276 - it's a trashy paper filter, not sure who the hell makes it, but you save almost $2. Cheap is always better, right? While you are at it, make sure you get 8 quarts of generic 10W30 oil at the gas station, you will save about $40 right there.
But seriously, folks: IF you put a pressure gauge on your car, you won't be putting any paper filters in there: 0W40 in a cold engine will flow, at idle, at over 90 pounds!

I'd bet you money it would be a Mann Fleece Filter in a "Mopar" box.
But think of the markup you'd pay for that Mopar box !
