Default immobilizer control unit

Hi
Am new to this but have had my crossfire 2005 model for 3 years and love it. My problem is I have been told after diagnostics that it needs a new immobiliser control unit. Chrysler part needs to be imported and very expensive but can get a Mercedes part a lot cheaper . I have been told the merc part will not work . Can anyone shed any light on this for me as it seems a bit odd !part number is 1708201726. I have also been told that no point trying to get a second hand part as cannot be reprogrammed. Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks
Jenny

The nearest thing the Crossfire has to what you are describing is the SKREEM module.
Failures do happen, but that is somewhat a rare occurrence. The dealer must order the SKREEM based on your VIN, no programming (other than the lock/unlock buttons on the key fob) is needed.

Used parts or Mercedes parts will NOT work, it HAS to be a "Crossfire" version of SKREEM with YOUR VIN in it, so you have one option here. NOW, beware that horror stories have been told of people going to a dealer for a SKREEM and after 1-3 weeks, then being told the PTCM is bad - and for $3300-$3500 they can have their car back. HOPEFULLY, your dealer knows what they are doing, and they get it right the first time.

What symptoms brought you to this point? (Asking because I dont' trust dealers)

Very "expensive" ? They are $200 bucks.. and I've seen out the door dealer prices at a low of $600 and an average of $800 .. and then there are some looking for a retirement plan off them. And the hard to get.. just what color is that smoke they are blowing at you.. I've yet to see any take an extensive amount of time.. seems typically a week as they send yours in and get a programmed (vin) one back.

The part you get will be a Merc part, the Chrysler part is that same Merc part in a relabeled plastic bag. The part will still have the Merc part number on it as do all the SKREEM units in these cars.
You should explain your symptoms and with luck it is something cheaper wrong with the car.
Attached is the part, it has a slightly different part number, but it is the same part but a later issue.

That does not look new as it has a VIN number. I have two used ones for whatever reason and they cost

I guess my post didn't make it clear as to why I was asking - but if you want help we DO need symptoms. Tell us how you got to this point.

Thanks Pizzaguy

One day it just did not start nothing at all not even a click. AA diagnostics showed immobiliser fault. It then started ! Same thing happened and had to get it low loaded to a garage. Now seems very rarely starts and their diagnostic machine showed it was this part that was at fault. They are asking £1500 t supply and fit and cannot get the part from the Uk.

Thanks Jenny

My point was the fact you can get three on eBay for that price.

I doubt that the immobilizer is at fault. Rather it seems to be the RCM or the CPS. As it is intermittent it could be either. When checked it should have a code set, if so what was it?
If it is one of these problems the fix is no cost or $50. Get the code read and let us know, maybe you are being taken advantage of, maybe not. Get that code.

Dave is (as always) right - if the SKREEM is at fault, you will be 3 cranks then nothing. Disconnect battery, reconnect, you get 3 cranks then nothing.

You are describing fractured solder on the RCM near the engine control relay. Replace the RCM or reflow the solder around the relay. It can also be a bad Crank sensor - like he said, around $50 USD for the part.

Sorry, but I do not think they are on the right track and are making this WAY harder than it is.
