Default Glove box light switch

I think I need to replace my glove box light switch. I put a new bulb in the switch and it still does not come on. Checked the fuse, #31 in the underhood fuse box and it is good. Sounds like the switch is bad. The old switch has a part number on it that is 170 820 01 01 and a manufacturer number from "Hella" that is 146415. I found two switch's on ebay and of course they are called Mercedez glove box light switch's. The part number on them is 210 820 00 01 and a Hella part number the same as the XF number, 146415. I'm betting they are the same switch. They look identical but there is just a small little difference in the top of the switch which looks like a molding difference. The metal parts on the interior look the same, from the pictures on ebay.

Does anyone know if they are the same switch? Since the "Hella" part number is the same, seems logical the switch's are the same.

If anyone know's, please let me know if they are interchangeable.

Thanks,

Jim

It is unusual for Mercedes to apply two differently part numbers to the same identical part, but you say the part looks different so that could explain it. Why the manufacturer would keep the same number is odd unless it works in both car series with a slight modification needed for the newer model.
Give us the eBay site.

180 - I just typed in "glove box light switch for Mercedez". I can't remember if I included the part number for the XF or not. See if you come up with it in your search. If you have any idea's after you find it, let me know. I'd be interested in what you think. Meanwhile, I'm going to see if I can pull the part number up on Hella"s website, assuming they have one.

If you are using a led light try turning it around , they are polarity sensitive

just type 1708200101 on Google and it comes up with eBay sites. Or type up the same number on eBay and they all pop up.

180 - Thanks for your input. I did as you suggested and true, there are a bunch of them. I ordered the one that said it was "new old stock".

For the fun of it, yesterday I went to the manuals that I have from Chrysler, in the first of the three books, and checked my switch assembly per the manual with an ohm meter. If I was doing it correctly, there seems to be good continuity thru the switch and comes on and off with the switch push rod. The manual also told how to check the wiring in the glove box connectors. Did that with the ohm meter also (hope I was doing it right) and it seems like everything with the wiring connectors is OK. Of course, when I tried earlier to get it to work, I did use a brand new bulb. No luck before and no luck after doing the checking with an ohm meter.

Any idea what else could possibly cause this switch assembly not to work? I'll have the new switch by Friday, it say's. I'm still going to put the new switch in. It seems like a very simple straight forward switch except for four wires coming in on one connector plug and two wires coming in on the other plug connector. If I read the manual correctly, some of this wiring also goes to the cigar lighter. I didn't try that (cigar lighter) since I don't use it. By the way, the fuse, #31, is fine.

If you have any idea's what might be contributing to this problem, I'd sure like to hear them. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I guess I shouldn't be so concerned about it since we get into the glove box so little, but I just want everything to work as it should. If I ever go to sell the car I can do it in good conscience.

Thanks,

Jim

WALLA Guy's. Just found out the hard way and by accident that you have to have the KEY in the IGNITION. Didn't even think about that! Too used to American cars where the glove box light and the cigar lighter work even if the key is not in the ignition. That makes more sense to me! I ordered a brand new old stock switch assembly for $20.00. Put it in and it still didn't light up. Tried the cigar lighter and another no go. Somehow thought of turning the key on (God works in mysterious way's) and every thing worked. Shut the box door and the light went out, just as it's supposed too. I just left the new switch assembly in and have one less thing to be of concern to me.

So if you have glove box light problems or cigar lighter problems, turn the key on and see if everything works.

I guess it never occurred to us that the ignition was not on. Pizza guy has a mod to make the glove box light and ciggy lighter live at all times.
Sorry, it is in the Owners Manual.
