Default Headunit question

My standard headunit keeps cuting the sound out for a while then coming back on , Then going quiet again.
But the headunit stays on and is still playing the cd so does anyone know whats wrong.

Another question is that i have a tv headunit ,standard DIN size and would like to know if i need to get and adapter facia or will it go in the hole when i removed the standard unit.

And also how does the standard headunit come out.

Thanks for any help

OK, there is TSB for replacement of the head unit for certain things. You'll have search for it.

It is a standard single DIN, so your new one should slip right in.

This is the tool (2 required):

There are a pair of really cheap tools needed to get it out, though. There have been a number of threads about replacing the stereos in this car and I think every one of them addressed removal.

Once again, do a search in the Audio forum.

Good luck!

My factory unit did that and it turned out to be the amp under the floor. I got the dealer to replace it under warrantee. It would play for hours and then just go off. Sometimes it would come back after a while, but eventually it would not. There is a thermal cut-out built in that might be coming into play but can't say without looking at it.

ppro

So its not just me then.

If its the amp thats causing the problem, Then when i change the headunit to a new one will this problem still persist.

And do you know where the amp is in the car and how to get to it.

Mine is an 2003 model so i dont think it will still be under warrenty.

Yeah, I got lucky - I bought a 2004 with 5000 miles on it before the 3-year period had lapsed and detected the problem right away.

Yes the problem will remain if it's the amp in the floor.

I have been in here several times and skip steps 2 and 3 (removing kick panel and door sill - not really necessary if you carefully coax carpet out from behind kick panel and door sill, which both are flexible enough to ease away from carpet as you do so.

You may be able to get a working amp from some one on here who went with a completely aftermarket system and does not use their factory amp.

I have seen them on eBay often.

The amp is under the kick panel on the passenger side - the part of the floor that slopes up to the underside of the dash.

Iv had a thought.

If i change the headunit , Then could i change the amp for an aftermarket one.
If so which would anyone suggest and would it need to be 4 channel or 2 channel.

I dont want do fit a sub or any other upgrades .

Are all the speakers in the car run off the amp.

Sorry for all the questions

You were thinking it was the amp that was bad so you have two choices

1. replace it and soldier on
2. replace it and the head unit (a much more involved and expensive choice)

If you're confused, I'd stick with option one - a simple swap.

If you have no budget to consider, by all means, option two - and probably turn the work over to a competent stereo installer...
