Has anyone tried concealing their detector by mounting in on the rear shelf, between the two seats? Obviously one couldn't see the lights and text, but rather rely on the audible alarm. I wonder if this would narrow the field of view for the detector.

Most radar detectors have to have a clear view of the pavement to work properly(according to the owners manuals ) so this would probably decrease the effectiveness of it. I personally have noticed a difference in how well my passport 8500 works when it is right on my dash compared to 3 or so inches above the dash. When its 3 or so inches off the dash with a better view of the pavement it seems to pick up signals from further away

If you're flying by the cop while he's got his gun on you,
isn't he going to know you're jamming him since he can't get a reading on you?

you are right if you are running a high end laser jammer it will jam to gun JTG. i have a switch which i can flip and turn of the jammers. When i get below posted speed limit i just turn the unit off.

I am back to my valentine 1 along with my laser interceptor

I think this would significantly reduce the effectiveness of the device. The angle of view would be reduced. More stuff would be in the way of receiving a signal.

Mine hangs from the visor and seems pretty low-key. I run the lights off and use a remote display and speaker.

any idea what detector I should smuggle into my country?

My theory is that our car can handle better, stop quicker, and is just plain better then most cars so our speed limit should be better as well.
I live in alberta and they are legal here.... I have the passport 8500 X50 Blue, cost was $500.00 or so from future shop, its good and if it stops just 1 ticket it can pay for itself if you count in increased insurance premium. But there is a new escort model the 9500 it uses gps to permanently lock of false alerts ie. walmarts auto doors valentines also i highly recommended detector it has fancy arrows that let you know if the "threat" is infront or behind you but i think permanently locked out radars would be much nicer since i slow down if it goes off either way in front or behind.....hope that helped

oh yeah so if you are worried about going through customs just drive over to Alberta, or either sask bc. Heres a wiki link if you scroll down a bit it mentions legal provinces/countries and wikipedia wouldn't lie, not to be at least http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_detector

GPS marked warning zones are handy - I use the proximity warning feature on my GPS to do this for me. As for warning against false signals, I am less confident. The problem is that false signals from some sources are used by police to mask their presence.

Once you get used to being hit with a false signal you don't pay attention anymore and WHAM! There's a speed trap for real. Not so much with X-Band and places where you pretty much know there's not trap - but on the highway for sure. I have developed a habit of double checking before I assume the "usual false alert" is false. More than once I was glad I did...

I have the passport 9500i with GPS. it doesn't "warn" agaisnt false signals. it reads the frequency and the location to ignore them.

where i'm from and in my city, cops pretty much only use Ka band. some have K band, but not many at all. all the door openers use K / X band, and on different frequencies. of course it's going to vary city by city, but at least for me.. i just mark them in my Radar detector and i never get bothered by them again. if a cop comes by with his radar gun on, Ka band i'm going to know, and if it's K band, it's going to be on a different frequency so i'll get warned anyways. i love it.

Understood. Good luck with that.

Interesting thing on my drive to Massachusetts last week.

Along Mass Pike somewhere just past the no-zone between NY State Thruway and MA Pike sits a traffic sign that has a radar in it. These signs are great sources of false signals. I am quite far away - over 3/4 mile, and my detector sounds off. I lift pedal and scan, see the traffic sign and think "OK, another false". Then the detector gives me another warning, this time laser, I make one more look (now maybe 1/2 mile away and running about the speed limit) and there he is - sitting right behind the traffic sign - Massachusetts State Police running laser.

The point is, if I had a GPS-marking detector, I could mark the sign, shut off the false, and be driving by fat and happy (I am both) and BAM! Laser, and I am dead meat. That's the point I was trying to make. I already mark known spots with GPS and have that warning, but I never assume the false signal is really false.

Fact is, it's not that rare that the enforcement will use the traffic sign radar signal for cover - they know that people with detectors tend to ignore them - and with laser, they get that window of opportunity before the speeder comes into range, to pop them.

I drove by the stake-out on my trip, counted my blessings, and had a nice ride the rest of the way to Ludlow where I got off. I was actually laughing when the laser warning signal went off because I had already pedaled (even though I am not sure I would have gotten a ticket for the rather tame speed I was traveling). Then I soon got another advance warning outside Belchertown on the 202 past Quabbin Scenic Outlook that a local enforcement officer was coming before he came into sight.

I figure I got my money back several times on that trip for my BEL STi Driver...

I was just wondering that. Whenever I try to mount mine up on the black dots, it falls off before I can even take my hand away.

Also, how did you fit you 9500ix at that spot? I tried putting my 9500i and the damn thing is way to big, the rear view mirror is in the way.

the pasenger visor is not functional now tho.. oh well get glasses.

i can take differnt angles if that helps but it fits just fine... just barily touches the rear view mirror.

I'm just guessing but it looks like the suction cups are up against the edge of the head liner and the unit is up against the rear view mirror. So really, the suction cups might not be doing much of anything - the unit looks wedged in and the suction cups just provide a point of contact to stabilize things. I looks like it works.

no no the suction cups are doing all the work... there is no wedging at all.. its not touching anything other than a slight contact with the mirror... but thats like laying a needle on your keyboard and saying its for stuctural integrity...

i dont know why every one seems so mind f'ed by this lol.

go and try it your self or clean your window and get new suction sups or something...

the black surface is not porus enough to make it to where it wont stick.
