Is that a direct fit for our cars? If I was building one from scratch, I would want the climate controls below the double din, but maybe the connections wont reach down there?

If I changed the radio I would want a double DIN with GPS so this looks good but has weaknesses.

If that plexiglass is just a butt joint, even if wire reinforced I would not give it much chance of a long life.
You need some kind of tenon joint or a doubler behind the joint.
What holds the bottom of the plexiglass, looks to me that it just flaps around. That alone will make the butt joint weak. From the screws down it looks springy.

If you look further in that thread, there is one made from scratch. Not joint to deal with....

Thanks, but that's using plywood, attaching that would mean even more hassle I'd say. Have to use the top half somehow and attach the bottom using the existing points, whatever they are.
Rudy did this before back in the day. Probably time consuming and that is why Rudy quit doing it, they got too costly due to the time spent on them, which makes a lot of sense.
I'll look for his thread on it.
Here is the later thread when he sells the last product and the radio with it.
Here is an earlier thread with a discussion about these units including a member who said it was easy and failed.
This member disappeared after promising other parts that turned out NFG.
Here is the thread where Rcompart and jonnyangel04 set about making the double DIN faceplate it got so expensive to make that the project was abandoned
