What a fantastic mod! I just finished mine, and can't believe that I can actually put my Base at +2! I had NEVER felt the woofers behind my seat before, and now it's amazing! Thanks!

I do have one question, the capacitors that I used were non-polarity 220mfp x 63volts. I got them from Fry's and they didn't have any 100 volt versions. Because they are 63 volts, is that alright? Are there any downsides to this?

Thanks again, your mod rocks!
-Chris

I don't think you are ever gonna push it hard enough to develop more than 63 volts across those caps!

Sure makes a difference, doesn't it? I don't normally second-guess the engineering team, but how did they miss this?

I did the quick speaker mod this weekend, while working up some other mods I needed to do to the SRT. I went to RS and picked up the 220 that they offered. It makes a difference and sounds a bit more balanced but I will try to find some 330/470 non polarized caps elsewhere. Thanks for the ideas.

I am getting ready to do this mod before I venture into getting a subwoofer. Bought 470s the other day solely it's the only think this Radio Shack carried. However, I wanted a second-opinion.

I enjoy listening to rap/hip-hop and dance-style music. I don't think the stock system has too much bass, for with the style of music I like, I enjoy a LOT of bass. So, which cap is going to be best for me? Thanks very much!

Seems like the 330's are the cap of choice for most of us. But I really liked the 470's.

It's hard to answer your question, you might try each and see what you think. (But I STILL say the 470's are the way to go!)

I did however read somewhere that the 220s were good if you like rap and bass. Fact or fiction?

Just make sure you get the wiring connections correct or you might not like the crackle sound:

So I'm assuming that the 220s are good for me?

220 or 330 or 470 ? Not sure. I think it's a personal preference thing.

My tastes and ears are different from everyone else's. I liked the 330's but REALLY liked the 470's.

Well, probably not.

See, the 220's and 330's took ALL the base out of the door speakers. Many seem to like that. I don't.

The 470s took almost all of the bass out, but not quite ALL of it. Seems like that, with 220 or 330 in there, you have to push the bass way up (because only the rear speakers will be getting any bass).

With the 470's, the real low frequency bass still gets thru the door speakers, but only the real low stuff.
It's not so much that it makes the sound "mushy" like without any caps at all, but there IS still some there.

I strongly recommend you do what I did: order two 220's, two 330's and two 470's and try them one at a time. It is real easy to install them behind the little pop-out panel in each door - I spent about an hour playing around in the garage, and had my answer!

But I AM fussy! Most everyone seems to like the 220 or 330, I just really preferred the 470. I even put a 330 in the left door and a 470 in the right door and ran the balance back and forth. I quickly knew I liked the 470s. Like I said, there is a LITTLE of the REAL low frequency bass still there, but not enough to make it sound "mushy" like from the factory!

The cost of the caps (from Mouser anyway) is very moderate and I think it's worth it to order 4 or 6 caps and see what you think! You can temporarily crimp them inline or simply strip wires and twist-tie them in for your test. THEN, make things more permanent when you knwo which one you want.

See post 321 for Mouser part numbers.

I've actually got some 470s in the garage that i haven't had time to put in yet. I in no way want to reduce the bass output as a whole. Will any of these caps do that? I like a lot of bass in my music. Sorry to be so inquisitive.

It takes the bass out of the door speakers, but not the woofers behind the seat.

I like bass, too. That is why we then run the bass up to about +3 or more!!! Thing is, it only comes out of the woofers behind you and the door speakers (which provide most of your mid and high range) sound better!
