Biggest stereo bang for the buck mod
Just did this modification with non-polarized 220 microfarad capacitors from Amazon.com. Definite improvement in sound quality. Modification is quick and easy to do. The directions provided at the beginning of this thread are accurate and easy to follow. Thanks for the write-up and photos -- they were very helpful.

A simple and cheap fix is to install the capacitors as this thread mentions. I have replaced my head unit with a Pioneer ($150) and really love it. I also ended up replacing the door speakers with Infinity Reference for ~ $50.
All of these things make a big difference. Start small. Stop when you are happy!
If you need capacitors, I will send a pair to you for $6 ready for install.

Holy Crap i just did this.... used 220uf capacitors from radio shack...... many pros and few cons. Mids and highs are improved(since its not muffled from the door rattling and each speaker is handling a specific frequency). bass from rear subs are louder than one would have thought. Sounds similar to a decently sounding/designed 8 inch powered sub. it does help tha i have an aftermarket Clarion receiver which has more power than the stock unit and has different level of bass EQ. I would DEF recommend this if you have an aftermarket receiver. The only real con is that the 220 capacitors take off a bit too much bass from the door speakers. i will get some 330uf and that should solve and improve sound quality. Oh yea another con is since theres a lack of 100hz-150ish hz bass, the music isnt as loud while driving. (bass isnt as boomy and punchy). Overall well worth mod that can be tuned to everyones liking.

$6 a pair mailed. You will have to come up with connectors. PM me and I'll send them forthwith. and post haste. I'll even throw in some spaghetti sized heatshrink tubing!
Anyone else reading this, I have ~33 pair to go to good homes. I'm not making any money on this, so no complaints! OK?
Paypal works for me.

Not only were the connectors supplied, two were already installed on the capacitors in such a way as to keep me from having to cut off them if I wanted to go back to original. I'd be able to just plug the two ends together. Thanks again. I heard about this mod from Eeric in St. Louis at the CAA get together, before I had not even thought about this, what a difference. I read this thread 1.5 yrs ago and did the mod back then. Great DIY instructions but I don't know if my own ear drums are blown because the bass still booms in my ride. I used 200 microfarad caps, but still drop my bass settings to -4 or -5 for it to be acceptable. Not too sure about this yet...
ever get the pics & the how to do it post up ??I would like to know more about this 200HZ high pass crossover for better sound out of stock unit too !!!!!
I did the 330uf caps a couple of days ago. I put them in with molex connectors so I can change just by plugging them in if I decide to change the frequency I want. Haven't really had time to comment on the difference it makes or doesn't make. I was able to run the BASE settings all the way up at moderate volume levels. Sounds pretty good.

It's pretty easy to do through the little cover on the door. Pulling the whole radio AMP is a little more involved. It would be nice to have a flash drive input, but I think that would require a whole new head unit. The little hookup that goes in through the antenna sounds good, but I think a little to expensive. I think it would be better to just replace the whole thing if you were going to spend that much. I guess if you could find a pre-owned one it would make sense.
