He is not an idiot - he is displaying the Dunning-Kruger effect. Your response, in your last three sentences, shows you are not as susceptible to Dunning-Kruger; that, or you are former law enforcement or, like myself, have worked with them for thirty years.

(Dunning-Kruger? Google it - it is a fascinating concept that has made me understand people far better and given me patience with them.)

If you get a car to which it has previously been applied how do you figure out what the density of the tint is?
My car is a former Florida car but the tint may have been applied farther North by the first owner.
