quick question about steering lock
I am in the process of having my ignition switch changed out at a local dealership. I have read that several of you guys have cut, or removed the lock, that locks your sterering wheel. I have noticed that my key turns easier when the wheel is turned past lock. Is that something specific to our vehicles? When I bought the car the ignition was sticky, and didn't wan't to turn. The dealer didn't say anything about this, and had some company suppossedly fix it. It worked for a while, but now I'm looking at 700 bucks for the ignition switch and a new key, I don't want to just have one key, and one is worn down too much to reuse. Should I get in the practice of locking the steering wheel when I park the car? Thanks in advance chris
My key got sticky around 30K miles. The dealer had another Crossfire with the same problem and switched everything out but the problem was still there. By the time they got to my car they knew what was causing the problem. It was the steering wheel lock mechanism. DON'T LET THE DEALER CHANGE THE TUMBER, LOCK MECHANISM....etc. It is a waste of money. Your problem is the lock mechanism. There is a pin causing the problem. Check the forum... someone did a writeup on it.

I read through that post a couple of weeks ago. The new cylinder will come with a warranty. It is a very good write up, but too much for me to get into. When I called chrysler switching out the cylinder was their answer. If It doesn't fix the problem, I'll take it right back. MB wouldn't even quote me a price, because they go by VIN numbers, and it would show that it was for a chrysler. Had I tried my other key, which wouldn't operate the keyless entry, I could have probably avoided this. Some how it decided to reprogram it's self, and now works. I will definately keep the steering lock in mind, if and when the cylinder gets sticky again. Chris

Bottom line, if the locking pin comes out, remove it, and reassemble.
If it won't budge, grind it down with a Dremel, and reassemble.
This is the cost effective route to the promised land, without buying additional parts (tumbler, etc.).
If someone like the Dealer is involved, who knows what those knuckleheads will try and stick you for, unless they follow this lead, and only charge for labor...
