A potential nightmare averted… thank you Crossfire Forum! Crankshaft Position Sensor
Even the Autohaus Arizona (the company I ordered from) was fooled by the trickery of the Chrysler Crossfire’s origins. I order the Crankshaft Position Sensor for a 2004 SLK320 and received the OEM Bosch part for just $42.96. However if you search for a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire Crankshaft Position Sensor you will come up with a Vemo brand replica part for $62. (However I just looked and there is no longer any part available for the Crossfire).

It happens.. after my Eurocharge tune purchase.. I was buying computer parts from across the pond.. fortunately bank called me first..
I changed mine at 41K when I bought the car, you never know WHAT the previous owner was putting in the tank .....
My 04 na xfire was dying on regular basis for 3-4 days when I finally parked it. Did research on this forum and took the plunge changing out the crankshaft position sensor today after verifying the the k12 relay was good.
Went to 7 auto parts stores here in denver, they all had the part but by different names then I had read about in this thread. Ended up at Advanced Auto Parts where they had a BDW cps, they brought out the box and it said SMP Intermotor genuine import parts. Did some quick research at the counter and found out the SMP is the parent company of BDW. Bought the part for $52 out the door.
Installation took about 1.5 hours as I never really worked on the car before, took my sweet time. I went out and bought a 12 pt 1/4 socket for this job, when that didnt work I just tried (like a couple people in this thread) a regular 6pt 1/4 socket which worked flawlessly. My regular 6 pt socket fit much better then my 12pt or 9pt.
ONLY PROBLEM was when I was removing the clip from the sensor I broke the clip so it doesnt snap in. I took it for a 10 minute ride with no issues but still am a little weary of the connector staying on.
Also is there supposed to be an inlet for the ram air (correct name?) pieces that come from under the motor cover on both sides coming from the grille? Mine only had one on the right side looking at the vehicle?
Thanks guys....And EXCELLENT job with the DIY instructions

Some people insisted on the wrong size of Torx driver to remove the steering wheel, this resulted in one member ruining the screw head and having a very hard job getting the steering wheel off.

last time I used my credit card the next day someone was gambling in Hong Kong at a new casino there !!! Then the next day a purchase in North Carolina !!! Good thing my credit card company was watching too !!! Hard to fly around that fast !!!!
Just had check engine light come on for the first time ever. Grabbed my lap top and used my eurocharged software to check code. Camshaft (Should Be Crank)Position Sensor code. Light went out and car is still running fine, however, I ordered one on ebay to be on the safe side. Make sure your getting a Crank shaft sensor.... not Crank!
Herko Camshaft PCH641 for $36 from Florida.

"Cam"shaft or "Crank"shaft position sensor? Not that it can't go bad, but more people have problems with the crankshaft position sensor, not the camshaft sensor. Just want to make sure you're chasing the right part. Also, if it turns out to be a crankshaft sensor, you need a Bosch brand - those seem to work the best in our cars.

changed mine out today after check engine light. I had the light come on, then it turned off on its own. Rather than wait for the other shoe to drop I picked one up at advanced auto. $45 and kept it in the trunk. After further research, I decided to go ahead and swap it out. Man that bolt is a bitC#. Make sure your E8 torx is a 1/4 drive or very deep welled 3/8. The clearance of the bolt next to the sensor is too tight for a fat 3/8 drive socket. I used a solid extension and if your talented, you can use a universal joint to make the angle easier once the socket is on the bolt. Getting the socket on the bolt is the hard part. Then getting the extension and the ratchet on the socket is a process.
It looks Soooooooo easy. Give yourself some time, the first time.
Could the car be pulling harder now???? Speed-o-meter seemed to rolling clockwise much more quickly and steadily toward the top end. Feels nice, even if its only in my head....?..

My co-worker had his Xfire die on him at a gas station and changed this sensor himself (one of his first "more serious" car maintenance experiences).
Just wanted to re-iterate that you can do this yourself. With the right tools it's an easy job. He used the Bosch sensor, bought the right inverse torx bits, and borrowed a wobble joint from me. He took pics and made a writup of the whole thing here:

I wanted to thank everyone for their input on the crankshaft sensor problem. I owned a 2005 Crossfire, which gave me no issues and recently purchased a 2004 with 34,000 miles on it. Less than a month after purchasing, I had the same "stall and not start" issues that were listed on this forum. I am having the crankshaft sensor replaced this week and was curious.....after replacing this part, has everyone had success with the problem? I'm a little skittish, after stalling on a highway, in major traffic.
Thanks for the assist. This forum has helped me a lot.

To all that have had this issue. Are there any fault codes that are associated with the the crankcase position sensor failure? Did this fix the problem long term?
Will the Bosch 003 153 27 28 part work on a 2004?
I am new to the forum and just purchased a 2004 CF with 15000 miles on it. So far it died once at the car wash, but started right back up and then yesterday on an exit ramp it died and would not start for about an hour. I am really scared to drive it now for fear that it will get me stranded somewhere. I have called the dealership and one wanted $450 to change this, I saw the write up on how to change it yourself and will definitley do that. Just want to make sure it is a long term fix.
Thanks

So this Bosch # 0 261 210 170 will work on a 2004? I searched on autohausAZ and this part did not come up for my car, they do carry it though. Just want to make sure before I order it.
By the way the price is down to $34.86
