So here is my horror story. I have an '05 na roadster with 71,000 miles. I was going to see a friend who lives about 35 miles away. I was on the Interstate doing 70 mph when I noticed my tach dropped to 0, I was going down a mountain at the time, so I didn't loose speed right away. After a couple of seconds I realized the car had cut off. I was able to roll about 2 miles to the bottom of an exit ramp and shut everything off. I tried to start it a couple of times, it turned over, but wouldn't start. I got out & checked under the hood to see if I could see any noticable problem, everything looked fine. I was all ready to call a tow truck, but decided to try the starter again & it started, but the check engine light came on. I drove the last 15 miles to my friends house, he lives down the street from an Advance Auto, so I went there and got them to check the code. It was "crankshaft Position sensor fail". I had never read this thread, but remembered people on this site mentioning this as a common problem. So thank you CrossfireForum.org. I bought a sensor from Advance Auto for $60, then drove the 35 miles home with no problem. When I got home I read this thread and decided to order the Bosch part from ebay since the Advance Auto one was made in Taiwan. (Thanks for that bit of info also guys). Hopefully I won't have any problems til the part comes in.

Must be a bad day for CPS .. mine decided to play I don't wanna game this morning.. Ebay should have mine here between Wednesday and Friday. Think the Harley is going to be getting some road time. Two lanes of barracaded construction building a new bridge here.. would be a prime spot to die and end up with with a shorter crossfire.

Well just to finish out the tale. Didn't even make it home. Stopped off to drop a movie off and that was all she wrote. Guess I should consider myself lucky it was a parking lot and not the side of the highway. Wife picked one up at Advanced Auto.. not a bosch but with lifetime warranty. So the bosch will be part of the ride along program in case the new one fails. Then they can give me a new one and the bosch will go back into standby reserves.

When usually does the CPS fail? Is it at similar mileage or through age? Does it happen just radomly? Mine only has 21K on it but it's still a late 2004.

Well, I just had this issue last week and because of this thread, I changed it out myself without a hitch. I believe the sensor goes out due to heat or just normal wear and tear. The biggest thing I was worried about was losing the torx bolt. So I placed a small dab of super glue on it so it wouldn't fall off the socket and into the engine bay. lol It worked and my car runs like a champ.

LOL.. after retrieving mine from the pavement under the car, I put a piece of duct tape on top of it and pressed it into the socket, and that worked out great. Bosch off ebay made it in today too, so now I'll be traveling with a spare for all my Tulsa area friends with a Crossfire.. lol. (see them far and few between here).

Yeah, I bought an off brand CPS as well but after reading the horror stories about the cheap stuff, I swallowed my pride and got the Bosch. Hopefully this was a one time thing because it's a pain in the *** to get work in that small space. lol

The main reason for the Advanced Auto purchase was the life time warranty.. so at least if it goes out I can put the Bosch in and take there's back. Then I'll swap the Bosch back into reserves and run the AA one.. see who gets tired first.. lol. Maybe if these don't hold they'll just refund and say have a nice day..

My Bosch part off of ebay came yesterday. I had a real hard time getting the clip off. You need to push down on the part right behind the wire, I couldn't do it with my fingers, so I used a long screwdriver, and pulled the connector off with a pair of pliers. From there it went very smoothly & probably didn't take more than 10 minutes to pull the old sensor out & put the new one in.
My 1/4 in. star socket didn't work, so I just used a regular 1/4 in socket.
Thanks again guys.

Well I am still dealing with the CPS. Advanced Auto part got my car running, however a heavy foot or hitting 80mph/3000rpm makes the car jolt to a stall and the CPS CEL is turned on. (this happen to anybody else? I havent read these symptoms from anyone else) Recently its taking a min to turn over, and i know what that means! Times ticking away!! I believe since its not a Bosch part, when I really put the sensor to the test, its failing on me. So my question is where do I get this part option A the Autohaus website, first post of this thread? Benz dealership (2 sensor options? quoted at 150 & 90$), or and LOLLL, the dealership at 198. interestingly, the dealership told me this was part number 5080350 & a google search shows me this is for a Wells part, not Bosch... HMMM.

I might be wrong but
Your symptoms sound more like a CAMSHAFT sensor problem if the CAMSHAFT sensor is failing.. Fuel will be
delivered to the engine intermittently, resulting in poor piston function,
and the car will struggle to accelerate and maintain speed
but then again it could also be a Fuel Pump starting to go bad or a coil

But anyway back to CPS
I got mine (BOSCH) from the Autohaz website about 2 years ago and have not had a problem with it .
I think it was 45$ as well and my Mechanic charged me 30$ to put it in.

Good Luck!

About 6 months on my Advanced Auto without a single glitch.. and a lifetime warranty.. might talk to them and see about an exchange if they think it's the issue?

HMM. ya there definitely is a lack of power there. Perhaps I do need to look into finding the CAMshaft sensor at best price. Probably however should replace this CPS as well too. thanks for the feedback everybody.

I'm having this problem right now as we speak. AAA thought it was the battery and sold me a nice battery for $160, and then my car died on me a few days later.
I thank everyone on this forum for helping me with what has become my 2nd major problem with my XF. The first being the oil sensor. Instead of $700 at a dealer, I spent $300 and had a friend work on it.
Now I'll see how he does on this sensor!
This is such a helpful site I'd likely buy another XF just for how helpful everyone is.
Thank you!
Linda

1- Lindalu, let us know how it all went for you after the repairs are done.

2 - JonnyB0ii, It is normal for a Camshaft sensor to have oil on it .. and I've also seen many CPS's with oil on them as well, as far as I know it is normal for the CPS to have some oil on it as well since its inside the engine block. Now that you've changed the sensor with a good Bosch one you should not have the same problems but if the same problems return, try the fuel pump and test your coils also change CPS.

FYI, just bought one on Amazon for $39.28 shipped. My 05 has 49k on her, so a spare, ready to go is a good move.

Great write up BTW. I printed it out for my XF maintenance book.
