replace crank and cam sensors together?
replace crank and cam sensors together?
so I have to replace the crank sensor in my 004 crossfire as it has been stalling as of late, already replaced the relay switch, but i am being told to replace the crank and cam sensors at the same time? I don't see the need for the cam sensor needing replacing but maybe someone could shed some light on this for me please.

Re: replace crank and cam sensors together?
P0335 is the most common error code for the crankshaft position sensor. Here are the possible error codes for the crank and cam shaft position sensors:
P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction (L5)
P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
P0337 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Low Input
P0338 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit High Input
P0339 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0342 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Low Input
P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit High Input
P0344 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent
What error code are you throwing that is leading to to replace the CPS? I would not change the camshaft Position Sensor unless I was throwing a code indicating there was a problem with it.

Re: replace crank and cam sensors together?
the car is not throwing a code at all, the dealer said we should replace both just in case im guessing. if there is no code, there would be no point then correct?
Would be replacing the CPS to eliminate the random shut offs, seeing as that is the most common fix besides the relay. which is done already.

Re: replace crank and cam sensors together?
it's basicly exactly what happened here. https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...on-sensor.html
the car runs fine for a bit, then out of the blue shuts off and won't re fire. if we let the car sit for a bit, say 10 minutes or so. it would refire, normally won't have any other problems, but on sunday it re fired and not even 10 minutes later shut off again and would not start. we let it cool down and it fired and drove it home. has been sitting since.

Sounds more like it could be your Relay Control Module. Check out this thread. https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...-no-start.html

Now, the reason I asked about miles was, I am trying to see when the CPS goes bad. Seems like everyone who complains abotu one has 30 to 60K on their cars. I have 20K on mine, so I guess I'll maybe buy one, but keep it in the trunk for emergency use (by me or someone else at a GTG).
As for me, I replaced my original battery in my 2005 (built in 2004) last fall before heading off to the Dragon. REPLACE your battery - mine was $90 at O'Reilly's. I once got stranded in a Dodge Durago that was acting like your XF, all it was, was a bad battery.

Re: replace crank and cam sensors together?
RCM's are known to have faulty solder on some boards. A weak battery could be the culprit as well, as these cars do funny things when the battery begins to go. If the battery is original, it is due for replacement.
Maybe someone else can chime in, but I did not think that a crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor would cause these issues without throwing a code. I could be wrong though. It wouldn't be the first time.

Was the RELAY replaced or the module? The problem is with the traces on the module circuit board, not usually the relay itself. ALSO, just replacing with new may not fix it, as they all seem to have been built with less than adequate solder!
Get a new battery, take the module out, and go read that thread - the defect is VISIBLE even to an untrained eye. (I mean the thread in post 8)
Re: replace crank and cam sensors together?
Crank and cam sensor "should" throw a code.
Relay Control Module will not throw a code and can stop your car in its tracks as the failing solder joints deal with the fuel pump.
I doubt VERY seriously that just a relay was changed. It's one of those replace the whole item and call it fixed (unless you are part of this forum!).
Yes the replacement RCM could go "bad" again after a year. The solder joints are just plain poor in that lower part of the board. On some of the RCMs I have repaired the poor solder joints are on other areas also.
NOTICE: You NEED to look at the joints with magnification. With the naked eye things may look just fine.
