Great Gas Mileage to the Gaspe Peninsula.
This past July I took my '07 base coupe from Kalamazoo, Michigan to New Richmond, Quebec in the Gaspe Peninsula.
Being horrified that I might end up with my standard gas milage of 21-22MPG, I determined to press a tad lighter on the gas pedal.
Basically, I'd gas up, pull onto either a freeway or toll road, set the autopilot at 70mph, (in the U.S.) and sit back and enjoy the ride until I had to get gas again.
I ended up getting 30.2 MPG over the 1,500+ mile trip. Of course, on the Canadian half of the route I was limited to 100-KPH, which is Canadian-speak for 62 MPH, which appears to be the maximum in both Ontario and Quebec and maybe Canadia as a whole.
An interesting note is that the gas prices in those two provinces averaged $3.90 USD for regular grade and $4.20 USD for midgrade. That is why I traveled about 300 extra miles by taking the US route as far as I could before being forced to enter Canada, rather than taking the shorter, all Canadian route. I figured that I'd be saving approx. $12.00 each fill-up by buying US gas, (needed about 5 fills) and would be way ahead of the game by driving the extra mileage, (4-1/2 hours).
I noticed that I could hit at least 250 miles by the time the needle hit the 1/2 full mark on the gage, and I usually chose to refuel at approx 300-330 miles.
Concerning Crossfires: Didn't see one during the trip but I ended up seeing a blue roadster in New Richmond the day after the Summer Festival.
All in all, I was quite proud of the fact that I was able to keep my foot off of the gas for once, and the rewards were astonishing.

It sounds like you had a great time on your trip and hit some milestones! We are driving through Quebec next week although not in the XF.
Last year I got 30 miles per gallon per tankful going up to Canada and back. I have an '07 base coupe too. Great gas mileage and great performance. Who could ask for more!
somebody told me that if you put the auto in the W mode you save gas !!! Starts off in second & shifts early !!! I just might try & see if it works !!!!!
Sounds like you did real good. The gas mileage these cars offer with the performance they provide is really remarkable. More than twice what you would have got from a comparable vehicle 40 years ago.

30 MPG sounds about right. My 2005 base coupe got 32MPG on a 4 hour road trip. Cruise control set at almost 70 MPH.
I couldn't believe my calculation but it was true! Left on a full tank and set the odometer. Got to my destination and topped off the tank and measured the gallons I put in Vs the miles driven. My MPG was at 31 and change.
I remember when I bought the car everything I read said said it wasn't the best on gas. Those people who wrote the articles must have been smoking something! That hasn't been my experience.

When I drive my roadster at the speed limit (or close) it averages 29-32mpg. I strongly recommend cutting through Canada...the 401 is a fun drive even if you may have to wait a while at customs. If you fill up in Port Huron or at the duty free gas station in Windsor you can make it halfway to Quebec at least before buying Imperial gallons.
When Road & Track and or Car & Driver did their original tests they only averaged something like 18 mpg from the 6 speed......they must have really drove the snot out of them.....try as I might, I've never been able to get less than 23.5 mpg.....typically get 24.7 & I hit 100 almost every day. I do believe 30 is possible on a trip kept to 70 mph......but I'll never be able to do that!! I use real gas ...no ETOH.
When I finally got back to the U.S., (almost) I exited at the Sarnia/Port Huron, Mi. crossing. I started to get into this long line of cars, (didn't know how long it was) and thought to myself, "I must be in the wrong line" swerved out and around and passed everyone until I saw that the line was for cars, the others were for trucks and busses. Luckily someone was asleep at the wheel and I ducked in front of them about 100 yds from the U.S. Customs. I must have saved myself at least three hours and pissed off a thousand people. The line I passed must have been 1/2 mile long and it wasn't moving a bit and that was on a Tuesday at 12-noon. I'd hate to get caught in that line on a weekend.
Regardless, it was good to be back in the land of $2.89 gas again.
