shifter knob
The **** is also glued in place.
Take a single edge razer blade and gently work it all around in the joint. Go slowly and take your time so you do not damage the surfaces. After doing the cutting, tape up the bottom piece so you can prevent damage when you use a vicegrip (set with only enough pressure to grip the layers of the tape) and gently turn the piece.
Good luck!

OH NO, its the search police
Theres several really good threads on how to do this as well as what not to do. A quick search will give you tons of good pointers and some extra info along the way.
Also, dont have your face right over the stock **** when your tugging at it cause when it goes it shoots straight up

No razor blades. No vice grip. There is no glue. Bad advice!
Unscrew the bottom tapered "nut" until it's loose. Make sure it, and your hands, are very clean. You are relying on friction to unscrew it. It is silver-painted plastic. Pretty much any tools will scratch it. Wiggle the **** a little and pull straight UP. And, like Pooly said-don't hit yourself in the teeth when it pops off. It's very tight.
Good luck.

You beat me to it ..... I was having my morning coffee while reading the posts, and when I read this thread, I almost fell off the chair. I had to re-read his post 2 or 3 times to make sure my cataracts weren't coming back.

Maybe it was Chrysler's solution to having the stock shift ***** coming loose.

Are you sure it wasn't Gopher Guts?
I too cringed when I read the razor blade and vise-grip method....scary...
I had the most trouble unscrewing the bottom 'nut'. Make sure the **** and your hands are clean and DRY. The **** came off mine pretty smoothly...but you do have to pull with some force.
(insert jokes here)
