Default Hood Release

Gang,

My Hood Release seems to be sticking (2004 Coupe). The latching mechanism will only "catch" all the way if I push down on the hood after it has been dropped down. As well, the pull handle (inside of the car) has a bunch of slack when the hood is closed.

Any thoughts? Is this as simple as lubricate the hood locking mechanism in the engine compartment?

Thanks …

Phil ...

Start by lubricating the hood latch mechanism with a shot of white lithium grease (available at most auto parts stores). Work the mechanism a few times and that should fix the problem. Also if lubing the mechanism doesn't end up taking the slack out of the pull cable, look for an adjustment point on the cable pull to take that slack out. I suggest you take care of this problem quickly before something snaps leaving you unable to open your hood.

Just hit mine a couple weeks ago with Silicon chain lube (motorcycle).. works a whole lot better now and no mess or trying to "get into" mechanism ..

Has it always been like this?
Any front end damage from a crash?

Gang,

Thanks for the recommendations. I picked up some silicone grease last night.

No the problem started a few weeks ago. No, the car has never had any front end damage.

Will let you know.

I'm sold on the stuff for everything "hinge and or cable" related. Unlike WD40 it sticks around a while. LOL
