2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Anytime I hear, " will not go past xxxx rpm "
I think clogged cats.
But before we talk about cleaners.
How has it been running before?
Mileage ?
Changed plugs?
Or how do plugs look?
What octane gas do you run?
Manual or auto?
Problem all of a sudden, or deteriorate over x amount of time?

Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Thank you so much for reply,
I'm an old retired navy guy, and we bought this car cheap for my sons first car, he wanted it, it wasn't running, gut told us it ran good, and stopped starting one day, nice car, bought for it a thousand dollars, hope it was BS me, but
Mileage is one hundred and 50
Same plugs that were in it
Premium gas
Automatic
No sure on history,
We replac d the crank sensor, cam sensor, and re soldered spot on RCM, did notice first relay on RCM had burn spots on contact, we, cleaned and light filed them back Into flat surface, very little came off, I think this really is the air controller, if not mistaken, it also looks form my view, like there is a new transmission installed, because it's clean, no road film on outside housing,
So I must say, cool looking car, and my teenager is excited, but I'm at a stand still..

Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Are you sure that a 2000 rpm limiter is not a good thing with a teen-ager at the wheel
By "dies", do you mean that when it reaches 2000 RPM, it completely shuts off, or it just stays at 2000 ?
At any rate, for $1000 you have a really good parts car, the headlights alone should bring you $800 or so if they are undamaged.

Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Teenage thing I understand, but he is a good boy, my first car was a 1968 z28, so it's in the blood, not saying that's a good thing, but he loves the car...and it was a good buy, it's a father and son project that hopefully we can solve, project cars like from my day, are pretty $$$ costly now, the old classics
Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Accelerates as it should, or sluggish?
Pull acouple plugs and take a look at them, post acouple pics.
I am thinking ignition problem, weak plugs, low voltage to coils, could be bad ground, when you start the car does it turn over nice and hard or alittle slow?
If all of that is good, then restricted air either inlet or exhaust.
Check filters
then a bottle of cata clean though it.
Can you drive it down the road at speeds, or will it not get high enough rpm to shift?
Electronic throttle body opening up?
Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Thanks, my friend,
No it want drive either, we tried to put in gear, drive and reverse, nothing happens,
It starts, nice a hard, turns over quickly, and runs at idle speed of 800 to 1000, it acceraletes nice up to 2100, short pedal burst, when it hits, 2000 to 2100 it acts like it misses, 2 or 3 times and then total death, no engine lights, no indication of any kind in dash display, we tried yesterday to engage in gear in the driveway, it would die at idle, so we held foot brake and set rpm at 2000 and engaged into drive, nothing, tried reverse nothing, it's like it not engaging, so know seems there is more, or there's related. Not sure, Love crossfire, sharp car..but little worried now.. it looks like the previous owner installed new transmission, it's pretty clean, no road film...

Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
Note:
We cleaned all grounds, and cables, new battery,
I will go pull plugs now, and check voltages, it's my understanding form reading other posts here, voltage can be issue in this car, so I will check everything and document with pics,

Should ask if they are able to pull codes. When I look at a car is the first thing I do.
All you need is an Android tablet or smart phone, a $12 OBD-II mini (for knee room) dongle (one of many similar), and the $5 Torque Pro app. The codes can be found online or at the end of the factory service manual you can download here.
I consider it an essential tool.

Hello,
in our german Crossfire Forum somebody has a similar problem, not 2000 rpm but at a higher speed it gave misfire.
There it was the fuel filter that was clogged. The fuel filter is under a plastic cover before the right rear wheel.

Re: 2004 Cossfire starts, but won't go past 2000 rpm
I'd not waste ANY more time on ANY thing. I'd measure fuel pressure at the end of the rail, passenger side, front of engine. If you don't have specified fuel pressure (dont have the manual in front of me, but I THINK they specify 45-55 lbs) then stop there and fix that.
Beyond that, remember that teh Transmission control module gets to 'vote' on throttle opening, but in park/neurtral, that would not be as big of a deal.
Response to Klay's post: The engine (at least in a manual) is rev limited to 4100 or so with the clutch in, I can't see an auto being rev-limited to 2000.
Fuel delivery, ignition or throttle body - that is where I'd be concentrating. And as others have said, reading codes and pending codes is also a good first step.
