What Is The Proper Tire Pressure?
hey has anyone tried Nitrogen in their tires? I heard about it yesterday. Suppose to stay at right psi longer and improve performance! I'm going to go to the shop and try it for giggles!
i've been filling my tires with about 78% nitrogen for years now
i have heard its more consistent; im not sure how readily available it is though. i'm sure you'll let us know Dan!

I work at a airport and have been using it for at least 35 years. Not because it is better it is what we use on the airplanes. But it doesn't change pressure as much as the air does with temp.
I always thought you were supposed to go by what the tires says, but then again, it only gives the "max" psi. I run about 40 in my car, but I cruize about 75-80 mph on the freeway and sometimes "north of that that".
40 sounds too hard. I run the 32 and 33 in mine. I think the #'s on the door jamb are for optimum performance, the car may not handle as well with too much or too little.
Your right about it being a bit hard, but from everything that I've ever read about tires and speed is this, if your going to drive faster, increase the psi. If I'm off base, or someone has a study they can post here it would be appreciated because this is the car I'll be "breaking my personal best" in and wanna do it as safe as possible!

higher pressures will allow the car to corner better. higher pressures generally reduce the rate of treadwear and increase fuel economy. higher pressure also allows the tire to run cooler which is important at high speeds.
on the negative side higher pressures result in a more harsh ride and reduce traction on soft surfaces (e.g. snow) and on uneven surfaces.
40 psi would probably be a good pressure for "breaking your personal best."

never tried it but i have heard of it. how much does it cost?
the advantages it provides for a passenger car are probably minimal. you will see it used in tractor trailers because it prevents oxidation to the tire casing allowing for a greater number of retreads. nitrogen produces less heat inside tires and is also supposed to leak out more slowly which should result in more consistent pressures. it is claimed that fuel economy is increased by up to 2% in trucks with nitrogen. some race cars use nitrogen because it allows them to better control tire pressures over the course of a race.
it's also used in airplane tires. i think that's because unconditioned air has moisture in it that will freeze and cause ice accumulation inside the tire since it's cold at higher altitudes.
I was running recommended pressures 32/33 in my tires but kept getting the low pressure warning light. I took it to the dealer to have them check out the TPM system and they "fixed" it by putting 36 pounds in all the tires.
Now I get to go back to the dealer so they can fix my passenger side seat belt. I've been having nightmares about it.
