Has anyone ever replaced the top switch on the rail next to the passengers head? My top operates intermittently. If I move the switch up and down a few times it makes contact and the top operates. I was just wondering how much is involved in replacing that switch. There seems to be a bit in the way that may need to be removed. I just wonder if it is worth the hassle or if I should just keep jiggling the switch when it doesn't make good contact?

Yes, I have replaced the switch, and it's not difficult with a good soldering iron.
What IS difficult is finding a replacement switch ( got mine from Bob down in Key Largo who had removed it from an old top assembly - doubt he has another )
BTW, the switch is on a lead about 6-8 inches that then has a connector, so you can remove the whole assembly and do the repair on the bench.

I don't think it can be bypassed because if you hit the switch with the top, when latched, might burst a seal in the cylinders and also damage the motor?

 

You can indeed bypass this switch by hooking the 2 wires together,
JUST BE SURE THE TOP IS UNLATCHED AND RAISED BEFORE PRESSING THE TOP DOWN SWITCH.

The switch almost feels like it's a little loose on mine...like it might be able to be slipped out of a slot. I just can't get to it when the top is all the way up or when the top is at the initial unlocked position off of the windshield.

Is the switch normally closed when the top is all the way up and that spring bar holds the little button down? It seems like since the switch is fairly sealed, it's just a matter of getter that little button to pop back out when the spring tension on it is released. Maybe one drop of WD-40 on the little button would do it?

 

THe switch closes when the top is unlatched and pushed up.
It is wired in series with the trunk divider switch. They both must close in order for the motor to run.

I have a similar problem with my top and found this thread. I had my top replaced yesterday and now the top does not operate correctly. I isolated the problem to the top switch on the passenger side top rail. It seems something should be holding it in place because it moves freely. Regretfully, I did not take photos of all the connections and the top before taking it into the shop. The shop said it must be an electrical problem as they did not touch the electronics. I don't trust repair shops but thought these guys new what they were doing. The owner said he would look into it and get back to me Monday, but I thought I would reach out to the forum. A picture of the switch assembly or video would be helpful to understand how this is suppose to work. It seems to move freely without any limit at the top or bottom. I need to wiggle it to get the top to work. NEVER had a problem until now. Any help would be appreciated- thanks.

 

You can use a, spst toggle switch. I am currently using this fix. Just a touch of gorilla glue will hold it in place.. Word to the wise buy a pre-wired switch

 

That is a normally closed switch. When you latch the top to the windshield frame, the top frame presses on the plunger, causing the switch to open, telling the PTCM that the top is latched or "closed". Wayne Mullins (Shamrock) came up with a substitute a few years ago - it is not an original design, but I have not been able to find a replacement.

So once again, the switch closes or "turns on" when you unlatch the top and the switch's plunger is allowed to "stick out" of the switch body.

I will message Wayne and ask him where he got a replacement.
