Default Beating a dead horse...

Ok, I know this has been talked about to death, but how many of you have noisy valve trains/injectors? I listened to another SRT-6 tonight and I could barely hear it running. If I stand outside with it running, I hear ticking under the hood coming from the valve covers. Could be injectors, but the one I heard tonight barely made a purrr. Also, under my engine compartment, I hear ticking that sounds like resonance in the exhaust, not quite an exhaust leak, but close. All of this noise is annoying. I'm not familiar with this Mercedes drive train. I've heard people say it is normal, others argue that it's not. None of the ticking noises are excessively loud, but they are very audible. Almost sounds like a diesel. Seriously. Doesn't sound like one bad lifter, or a valve guide going bad, just rattely. The dealership of course says there is nothing wrong with the car. Anyone?

P.S. The car only has 12k miles on it.

Mine is doing the exact thing. I bought it with 18 miles on it a week ago, and it just does not purr like the others I have driven. The dealership here said that it is completely normal. I think it sounds like $**t.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Oh, I have a SRT6. The more I think about it, the more upset I become. The exhaust/clicking sound is so loud, I can hear it reflecting off of buildings and other cars when I accelerate. It's loud enough to hear it at 75 MPH, with the windows up. It's embarrassing to go through a drive through, or let my engine idle. It sounds like an old toyota with a leaky exhaust.

Well, at least I'm not imagining things. I'm going to guess that it could be the injectors pulsing. Not sure why some do it and some don't. The engine (not exhaust note) is no where near as quiet as my G35 Coupe that I had. Well, with the 8/80 warranty, I guess I'll just drive it. If something lets go, I'll worry about it then.

Hmm. Mine is louder than a NA Crossfire, but it's just the SC whining. Pretty quiet otherwise.
The noise you all are describing kind of sounds like a header gasket issue to me.

I figured out that it is def. injector tick on MY car. Mine does what you are describing. I took a LONG mechanics stethoscope to mine recently, and I'm 100% positive its injector tick. The valves were actually very quiet under the valve covers. Put the probe up to the fuel rails and it's DEAFENING through the stethoscope...

Drive it!

I'm guessing the fuel rails are directly under or close to the SRT6 covers?

Yeah, it's a bit of a trick to do, but you can do it. I'm convinced the car 100% fine. Runs too good not to be. Mine isn't that bad though. It doesn't sound like a diesel, and I can't hear it at all aside from idling with the windows down. Drive thru's aren't a problem either. Maybe some are louder than others. I've never been around another one to compare.

Mine is kinda noisy as well. I personally think it is a combination of things. For one the valvetrain and second the exhaust manifolds. Mercedes uses stainless steel which is kinda thin so the sound from the exhaust pulses are quite noticeable. I'm actually waiting for Floored Fab in Arizona to complete the shorty headers. They are going to be mild steel with Jet Hot coating. I'm hoping that these headers will both eliminate some noise and make a more tuned exhaust note. Plus I'm always up for a little more horses too.

Though some still say the ticking is normal, check out this thread:

It may very well be a normal thing. I just took in a CLK320 in trade at my dealership that only has about 26,000 miles on it, and it sounds exactly same as my AMG motor.
