Default is this normal

Xray had his ic pump go bad,he changed it with one i had given him. the one he installed was removed from a good running car, ( it was good when we removed it), and worked for about 2000 miles and a month , then the ic pump went bad . yes it was a stock pump. does sitting on the shelf harm them? what about a new one sitting in stock .. do we need a build date on them or what.
what is the best pump to get?
jim

My preference is a Johnson CM 30 Pump , should not be a problem (shelf life) sometimes things just go bad, The OEM pumps are notorious for that ......... Good Luck.

Im skeptical about my current cm30 pump. Just ordered the factory style pump off siliconeintakes.com that someone was nice enough to link in the "no boost" post. $130 shipped, and if i need it ill have it.

I bought a ford lighting pump off ebay for $87 shipped back when my car had 2000 miles on it and it has worked perfectly. My car seems to run pretty good with it.

The first pump was probably good.

My money is the IC pump FUSE is blown. Same symptoms as broken IC pump. Check it out. I put one 5amps higher in when I switched the the johnson.

I had the johnson pump and it worked great for about 7 month's. Then it started blowing fuses so I switched the 10 amp with a 15 amp fuse. The good news was it didn't blow the fuse anymore but the pump didn't work after that either. I have replaced it with the ford lightning pump and has been working great so far.

Interesting related read:
OEM ic pump vs CM30 - MBWorld.org Forums

Appearantly they are saying the stock pump 002 outflows the Johnson pump cm30. Half way down the first page someone compares the 002 pump to the 003. I looked at the charts but couldnt figure out how to read them.

Do you guys have the pn off your lightning pump? I want to see if its this one:
http://www.siliconeintakes.com/produ...80ccbdea6c292f

It seems my johnson pump changes tone like its working fine then struggling. Can someone who has hot wired their pump listen to your pump(engine off) and tell me if this is normal? I dont think it is.

I pulled my bosch pump this morning and took it apart. The only issue I could see with it was the brushes. They were worn down to less than 1/4 of their original length. This may be why the pumps start getting intermittent as the spring that keeps the contact between the brushes and the stator no longer is keeping the brushes tight like they should be. I also saw that they have a small capacitor soldered across the pos and neg input this may act like a starter cap and could be going bad too. Anyway I am waiting on my johnson pump to arrive and will be interested to see if there is any diff in my IAT's since I have been watching them very closely I want to know if the johnson actually will keep things cooler. I will let you all know.

Same thing I discovered recently. I had the Johnson installed & then tore apart the OEM Bosch. Found the same thing with mine - REALLY worn brushes. The pump mechanicals looked fine.

i went to an electronics shop to replace that capictor for my cm30 and was told it was there to absorb any surge when the pump kicks on. my oem had burnt windings in it when it failed

and the BEST pump is the meziere pump, but it will be a custom install from the electrics to the hoses to the mounts. but it is the best on the market

I think the best pump is the "ford lightning" pump on ebay. It is a direct fit, flows more than enough and best of all is under $100 shipped!

I still feel it is the way to go, why pay more or have more install headaches than you have to? I am all for using what works best for the least $ and least effort

I would hardly call a pump that requires "custom install from the electrics to the hoses to the mounts" the best pump when it does not give you any more power, only more headaches and less $ in your pocket.

This is an interesting thread. I've noticed some failure in my OEM I/C pump and was about to pull the trigger and replace it with the Johnson.

Maybe the ford lightning is the way to go. What to do, what to do?

They are all going to fail! Just a matter of when... less than a year is probably not reasonable. But without doing a failure analysis it is just another bad pump.

I like the idea of the Meziere's just for the flow rate and low stress I would be putting on it in my use. It should make it last well, all things being equal. It would also flow more if I wanted to go with the NW/Woody super cooler. (which I am not inclined to do at this point).

As the saying goes.... you pays your money and you takes your chances..

ford lightning pump needs wiring. you also need to remove the top and reuse the oem top as the ford lines are smaller. and for the 100$ you still have a bosch pump that WILL fail at some point.
yes the meziere is more work. but not that much . it outflows and will outlast any pump being used today.
with the amount of people using remote tanks and larger systems this pump will handle all the biggest flow demands.
cheaper isnt always better

post up your data proving that it will do all the things you say.

you take out a few screws, swap tops then splice in the ford pump and your done in about 4 or 5 minutes. the pump will fail? any pump will fail, just like any car will eventually fail like any other mechanical thing.

mine is working great and that extra money sure was nice to keep too.

heres a breakdown of the meziere pump.

http://www.meziere.com/ps-1128-1096-wp316b.aspx

the screws on the bosch pump strip very easily. your welcome to use any pump you choose. keep the extra cash you will need it for another pump. as for any pump failing the pump your buying is the very cause of the biggest complaint on this forum. just what i would buy to replace a known problem, the same pump again!
for me i have the cm30 and it works great. when i add my 3 gal tank i will add the meziere. just my 1/2 cents worth.

the reason the stock pumps fail is because the vast majority of these cars sat on lots for long periods of time without being used.

my pump is still going strong thank you.

everyone, just buy what you want.

some people like to spend way more money with no better results. some people like to spend less money for same results. it is up to you
