The perils of buying used stuff............

This pulley is crazy, I don't see how Gr8len had this on his car!

The hub is 4mm too long and the stock bolt doesn't fit inside the hub.

My buddy has a lathe so I'm off to make this work.

I'd call the seller of the pulley to find out where it came from so you can search information on it. It could be that it shipped with a replacement bolt that's longer ....... or something. Heck I don't know. Good luck, just remember that if you shave it down there's no going back.

WTHeck? I haven't swapped pulleys yet, so I don't really know from experience about our stock pulley. Is the stock pulley shimmed? Are there shims that go inside the crankshaft sprocket? Sorry about your trouble with this pulley. Did Gr8Glen send his bolt with it? Is it different some how? Also, I noticed that you broke the breaker bar getting the stock bolt off. I know they say not to use an impact gun for installation, but I wonder if it's o.k. to use for removal. Or is it just too much force on the fly ring gear, even with the proper flywheel locking tool like you have?

I was under the impression that most buyers of pulleys used an impact wrench to remove the old and install the new. Maybe I'm in la la land but that's what I thought.

I thought so too Les, but in a different thread 32Krazy says it isn't the proper way. What do the directions say when you buy a new one?

i wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use a 3/4 impact to remove a bolt but install is another matter. proper torque and then 90* more is the only way to ensure that crank bolt stays on. no way you can do that with an impact wrench. much the same way with rims. would you use an impact to install your wheels then make a high speed run? or would you torque the aluminum wheels with a torque wrench to ensure you don't over torque them and crack a wheel?

theres always a quicker way but in the end it may be a better way

a GOOD impact wrench is the best way to get the bolt out... just remember to either put some plywood in front of the radiator or take it out so you dont back your wrench into the radiator.....

Yeah, the bolt is tight! I broke the breaker bar but a regular 1/2 drive ratchet held fine and the bolt came right out. I was using a 4 foot pipe extention and still pulling pretty hard. I don't think my cheapy impact would do it.

So I turned down the new crank bolt to fit in the hub. That looks good. Now I have to get a better cutting bit to cut the stainless hub. I can borrow one from work tomorrow.

So I could bolt this in now but it would sit about .100 forward too far.
Dina, good point mabey there is a spacer in there GOOD THINKING MAN!

I'll double check that..

Caught that thanks!
I put a good size bevel there and then Emry clothed it super smooth.

That's the pipe I used to go 90 degrees after the 150lb torque.

I heated the hub and it slipped right on.

Looking good!

Is that the LET mod 1 water pump pulley?? That sharp outside corner makes me think about that. Check the inside and see if it has a nice sized radius. There was an issue with the original LET WP pulley and they redesigned it to be thicker and have a nice radius on the inside of that angle to give it strength....make sure you do not have the 'mod 1' WP pulley...

It might be.....
I can take it off after work and measure the thickness, do you guys know how to identify the weak one? It looked wimpy to me actually...

Re-read your post Mike, I'll look inside at the machining to determine.
