Default Weird Transmisson shift

Hope you can help. I looked all through the forums and can't find this one

It seems as if my trans is in too high of a gear all the time. I'm in 4th gear at -30 mph and the car is always sluggish and ******* it.

My IC pump is new and working , I had a leak in the trans o ring and replaced it and checked the fluid per the manual and help on here.

I'm going to try a throttle reset later but was wondering if anyone else had this problem.

When I jump on it it will downshift and takes off like I want it to but under normal acceleration it's really sluggish. My rpms are around 1400-1600 most of the time and it shifts around 25-2800 under normal acceleration.

Thanks
Brian

Apologies if I'm telling you how to suck eggs.....

722.6 Adaptive tranny reset procedure
----------------------------------------
To reset the adaptive settings of the 722.6 tranny
Put Key in ignition
Turn to position 2 so dash lights come on.
This is the one before the car starts.
Put foot on throttle all the way to WOT and ensure kickdown switch is engaged
Hold it there for 15 seconds
Turn the key to off but dont take the key out
Take foot off the throttle
Dont touch anything, door or anything
Wait three minutes
Then take the key out and replace and start

First 40 shifts are the key to the adaptive setup

For Power setup
make sure at least the first 40 are half throttle
3000-3500rpm

For Economy Setup
drive really slow for the first 40 shifts and try to keep all shifts under 2000rpm.
----------------------------------------

b22b - I'm not sure if the adaptation is a 40 shift rolling average....others may be able to confirm.

Thanks Billy - didn't know about the "first 40 shifts". Makes sense now, though. Will do a reset today and pay closer attention to how I drive it for the first 2 or three days.

Throttle reset is about 10 seconds shy of this tranny reset... Just an observation..

Upon further observations..

Almost sounds like the tranny mode switch is in the 'W' position instead of the 'S' position.

Little heavier foot should "extend" the rpm shift point

After my Eurocharged tune one morning after a rain I had switched to W mode for my gravel - mud driveway.. Later that evening I realized take off was a little off (little short of "normal" without my tune).. otherwise I don't think it affects the other range of gears.

I did this on my srt-6 and it shifts better now. Mine was sluggish under half throttle it was like I'd literally have to give it more throttle then I wanted to to make it do things. I believe it was in an economy mode as before I did the reset, it would search for OD at 30mph, it wanted to be in the high gear badly.

W mode (Winter) forces first gear out of the equation - if you set the tranny to W and force the tranny to "2" you should stay in 2nd gear all the time.

I drive around the 0-35mph (0-60kph) areas of town in "S" + 2nd gear alot of the time. Very well suited to 35mph and only 3-3,500rpm. Plenty of pickup and you know you're already up around >7psi boost.
into the 50mph areas I change to 3rd and sometimes 4th. Rarely use 5th unless I've forgotten or am on a trip and wanting to cruise.

i.e. In W mode it starts out in 2nd (unless you autostick it to 1st). YES, it's that simple.

I am of the understanding that W mode lowers the shift point for all gears for the same reason it starts out in 2nd, to lessen the power to the rear wheels.

Sounds logical to me.. "typically" when I get to blacktop it's back to "S" mode... and having the tune fairly fresh I really didn't notice a drop off after first gear (second) take offs when I had left it in "W"

This is from an R170 (SLK) MB Manual

it does seem there is some influence on the upper gears - but it lacks detail.

Exact same here. Do you have a Eurocharged ecu tune?

I tried the reset described above on two occasions.

I read on another MB forum that it's like urban legend and doesn't work.

My experience is it did not work either time I tried it.

I'm going to have it reset by a trans shop tomorrow and see what happens.

I'll let you know what happens
Thanks
Brian

When I leave the track (after a long day of pushing real hard at either autocross or road course) the car is MUCH more responsive and has adapted to the VERY aggressive driving. Is it just my right foot "muscle memory" from the day??? Lighter; because I just burned an entire tank of gas?? I believe it is the car adapting, and is not an "urban legend".

You are correct that the trans adapts. it's supposed to.
What I was refering to as urban legend is the whole turn the key on and step on the gas pedal to reset the trans thing.

It works for me. I think if your car has already adapted to aggressive driving you would not notice any change. I see lots of highway traffic and the car gets boggy quick.

Oh it works.. PO's wife drove mine most the time. And when I found the forum and the reset.. It was like "WOW"... Now I do it pretty much weekly and can still tell there is a tweak of a difference when I do.
