Supercharger pulley options changing from EC 65 MM Aluminum
Hi!
So previous owner had s EC aluminum 65mm pulley put on. It's an all black pulley and if I recall correctly it's something like 64.7mm and tune.
I have recently realized there is play in the bearings. Bearing moves slightly inside the pulley. That scares me as I have heard horror stories of pulleys grenadine and breaking apart after experiencing play in the bearing causing a lot of damage.
I do have a scattershield so that should help at least somewhat but if it comes apart at the snout that would be bad news.
I am now wondering if I need to replace the bearing and take my chance with the aluminum pulley or if I need to just replace the pulley all together.
Are there any 65mm pulleys that people had better experience with? I know the polish company had pretty decent reviews but I don't know if they are still around selling their steel pulley.
My other question would be, if I reach it with another 65mm pulley, will I need a re-tuned from Eurocharged or should that not be necessary? If I wouldn't need a re-tuned, does it make a difference if tune was for 64.7MM and new pulley is 65MM?
Amy advice is appreciated!

The diameter difference is roughly .012 and would make no difference to your tune at all unless the profile was way out of spec. The .012 could be just the tolerance required when making these pulleys.
I agree about the aluminum pulley. I have two SRTs, one has a stock pulley and one has a tune and the 65mm pulley from the guy in Poland..I had to swap pulleys between the cars recently while waiting for a new bearing for the stock pulley. Neither car seemed to care.
Thank you both for the advice! I agree, I need to look for another pulley asap. Is that company in Poland still around that makes steel pulleys? If someone could help me get a hold of them or let me know where to find them I'd much appreciate it.
The steel 65mm pulley from Poland was IBF. I have been searching but can’t find anything. The original listing on eBay was closed in May of 2018. I would run a stock pulley before I would run an alum pulley. If you are looking for a performance boost you could run a stock supercharger pulley and an aftermarket crank pulley.

The ad is still there today.

I've never read about an ASP 178 diameter Crank pulley failing. They were the "standard" for additional performance prior the variety of supercharger pulleys entering the marketplace. There were other crank pulleys less reliable offered by other vendors, in crank sizes such as 181 or 185. The stock crank from the factory is 155.
The ASP crank pulley was expensive, around $950, so they were bypassed, and owners decided on the "cheaper" supercharger pulley at $450.
It's all about choices....

I tried it again and still didn’t find it. You must live cleaner than I do.
Thank you for all your posts. I just reached out to the company and they said they still make them. Haven't listed a price..
I am also looking into crank pulleys as described by Dennis. I haven't made up my mind which way I'm going to go. The aluminum pulley definitely scared me a bit so I put on the stock pulley again for now. Is that a major issues since Eurocharged tuned the car to the 65mm? Drives fine, little less torque but still powerful of course.

My vote is for the ASP178 pulley kit from Needswings. More powerful than the supercharger pulley. You'll need a shop for installation. The torque specs on the crank pulley bolt required a 2' extension on the torque wrench and access from underneath the car. It was worth it.

You actually mean torque to a certain setting and then using a long breaker bar with a extension turning the bolt another 90 or 180 degrees, I forget which. You also need a flywheel locking gizmo.
Torque wrenches are too expensive to ruin.
I bought the tool to hold the crank. Worth it. I'd buy the crank pulley from @NeedsWings long before an eBay supercharger pulley. Crank pulley is where it's at for many reasons.
So after thinking about it all for a while I decided to purchase another Supercharger Pulley from IBF in Poland made from hardened steel. RedDog had great things to say about them and the folks over on the Mercedes forums did as well.
I reached out to IBF and he gave me a great price including shipping that was just too good to give up.
In the meantime I will be running the OEM pulley and it will take 2-4 weeks for the new pulley to arrive.
To be safe I will be using the scattershield as well.
Thanks for everyone who has responded. To me the price was worth it and I have learned the best solution here is to either lay more and go with crank pulley or at the very least inspect the supercharger pulley closely periodically.

Hi,
would it be possible to add the IBF contact details on here please?
