$24.99 Thrill Ride
I put a Spectre Air filter on my n/a crossfire directly on the main opening guess you call it the throttle body? but not a CAI set up just a filter, I wonder has any one else tried this?
The difference is amazing! the throttle is more instant, and you can really hear it now! think I even got a second gear scratch yesterday.....
Cant wait to try the quarter mile again to see the results
The gas mileage has not changed.
There is one thing though
The fella at parts hse sez dont put too much oil on the filter
Well it died three times the first day must have fouled up the o2 sensor or some thing but it runs great now!
Almost took it off and put original system back.
Bad part is..... I missed the Houston GTG Saturday nite cause of it..
Sorry you guys.......I will try and post a pic. on here or in my gallery....

Oh yeah btw. I just got my state insp. done yesterday with new filter in place. he didnt care and it passed fine..
The rubber boot that filter is mounted on is a bit tight but if you remove it from the filter first then it can be clamped in place, then work the filter onto the boot afterward . . . . nice tight fit!

Nice. I always wondered if you could do that. May be some kind of starting point for a cowl induction.

My thoughts exactly! Cowel Induction like Chevelle. . . . Was looking at the cowl and the rubber seal that goes against the hood there. Thinking how could one try this out?
Know this sounds cheap but there are some types of vacuum cleaner nozzles that are very narrow could maybe hook 2 up to flex tubes down to a intake box around the filter such as the type that are on many carb systems
It dont always have to be pretty to be effective.....
Who knows might even find one in stainless.....
Or aftermarket...

i'd be really worried at the air temps while sitting in traffic, but i've wondered if that would work because of how much less resistance there is. i believe dpp (can't really remember who it was) but the guy who road races and managed a srt6 transplant runs something simular, but Y'd with 2 filters. he also opened up the plastic on the firewall to allow cool air to come in from behind the hood.
I don't get it? You took off the cold air intakes and put a filter where all the hot air lingers? Please explain the point? How are you now forcing any air into the system?

I have profiled the under-hood temps per this thread https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ad.php?t=28109
Most people spent more time critizing my proceedure than trying to understand what I wanted to accomplish! Most seemd to think I was trying to get at intake temps but that was not the point at all....I simply wanted to see what ambient air temp would be available at different points under the hood...including right on top of the throttle body where Harleyracefan put his filter!

An operational hood scoop sitting smack on top of that filter would be the ticket, just letting it sit there and suck hot air as it sits makes no sense to me.
By jbomar's test it looks like the hotest air is at the radiator and throttle body.
The fact seems to me you would want more, colder air not less, hot air.

I understand everyones worries about heat, but have you tried taking the filter box off when its hot? its really hot!
One thing I know is that the difference is incredible! almost instant throttle response! and the sound is amazing almost like a V8. this car has come to life! Im thinking about going to the strip this weekend and see what new numbers I get now!
Hey its cheaper than a set of stock filters too! just try it you'll be shocked! Im wondering if this shows how restrictive the stock system is because the time it takes to build up the vacuum on the stock filters back to the intake. also I dont know what you mean by forcing air in its not a turbo or s/c....Were talking about less restriction, there is no force with stock, just cool air ducted into a hot box! sucked in by the motor (vacuum) Any wind force is null when it hits the filters until the vacuum pulls it thru the filter after building up vacuum between the intake and the filter....just my opinion......

I think the CAI's are great but it would be better with the filter at the intake (throttle body) not out in front of the car.........too much time too build up the suction that far away......Thought about running some sort of ducts thru the stock way back to the filter or just dump in front of it for fresh air?

I do know that win the filter inside like that it eats MAF . , I do like the idea of pulling the cold air off the hood of the car , but that post is little old, and seem nobody has done anything with the idea
Well, it is an old thread, and most moved on to a reguler CAI that brings cold air into the TB. If you research more on here, you will see discussions of "Ram" air, and "Cowl" induction. They never seemed to make any difference, as much as bringing cold air in from the front of the radiator. I never would have liked this set up...just looks cheap to me...each to their own though...
thanks oledoc - I agree, it's not a pretty mod but it seems effective according to the fella who posted it, also it's right in line with my pocket book and expertise...I'm gonna keep researching stuff on the forum, I'm sure I'll find a solution I can use.. love my crossfire love the forum - Stephen (coolx)
You know guys, long before functional hood scoops became popular in the late 60's and early 70's, all cars inhaled under hood super heated air and still managed to perform pretty well.
True, It only makes sense that cooler, denser, outside air would increase performance, and it's a proven fact that a NeedsWings CAI will cut nearly a 1/2 second off your 1/4 mile times in an automatic NA Crossfire.
But personally, I think it has more to do with the fact that the free flowing, higher cfm capability built into the NeedsWings CAI is what improves the performance, (over the more restrictive stock design) rather than just the introduction of cold air, (which the stock design already does).
I'd be willing to bet money that a stock NA Crossfire with nothing more than Harleyracefan's Spectre filter set up would come out ahead of a Crossfire with the stock air filter in the 1/4 mile. Simply because it would allow a less restrictive introduction of air into the intake, (even though it's heated under hood air) than the stock system does..
Osofast, why would the spectre system "eat" your MAF? Just curious.
