Default Oil leak problem Question

Today I went to a Chrysler Dealer to get an oil change and asked them to check around the drivers side valve cover for oil wetness. The later told me they had to order parts to fix an oil leak which they said was at the valve cover area and I think spark plug seal or something like that. He also mentioned freight line or liner along with the word Mercedes.
They placed on order
1-5097104-aa gasket cy 9001004
1-5097105-aa gasket cy 9001004
1-5080088-aa gasket OI 9001004
1-5096479-aa cover cyl 9003027
1-5096480-aa cover cyl 9003027
To fix the problem. Does anyone know what these parts are? They seemed very evasive when I asked questions. They did say this would take the full day to do. Can anyone shed some light on this?

That's odd. There should be:
2 valve cover gaskets.
Oil filter housing gasket.
Oil filler housing gasket(?)

and the little ones are RTV'ed in place.

I'm sure someone will chime in here-there are folks who know these #'s by heart!

1-5097104-aa gasket cy 9001004 VALVE COVER GASKET, LEFT
1-5097105-aa gasket cy 9001004 VALVE COVER GASKET, RIGHT
1-5080088-aa gasket OI 9001004 OIL FILLER CAP GASKET
1-5096479-aa cover cyl 9003027 COVER, CYLINDER HEAD, RIGHT
1-5096480-aa cover cyl 9003027 COVER, CYLINDER HEAD, LEFT

I just pulled these out of the parts manual from the ENGINE group, figure 3.2L-210.

That looks like overkill for a valve cover leak.... it is usually the small cover on top of the valve cover that is fixed with new RTV gasket material.........

Mike, are the last two (covers left and right) the little cast covers that are RTV'ed in place? Unless they're cracked, I don't see how one could justify...oh, right. This is a dealership. Right? Silly me.

What do you think, They're over doing it or maybe just saying they are doing it? Seems nuts to me also. They said they checked and the covers are torqued properly.

Those are the valve covers(big ones).... dont know why they would replace them unless they were physically damaged... with all those parts it sounds like they are padding a bill.....

edit: they are actually called GASKET, ROCKER COVER

Maybe just preparing for the worst. Would be a pain if they start working on it an found they did not have a required gasket.

My '06 Coupe came with the top end cover oil leaks. Six months ago at 15,000 miles, Airpark Chrysler, Scottsdale, AZ cleaned and resealed the area with black silicone sealant. 50 miles later the check engine light came on. At least two oxygen sensors had failed, probably from the silicone rubber sealant they used. No charge, under warranty but much wasted time on a do over. Seems real stupid. Right side is seeping again already.

RTV shouldnt cause an o2 sensor to fail, as theres no way for the rtv to enter the combustion chambers, nor would the leaking valve cover gaskets affect anything like that.

So why does Permatex offer an RTV gasket sealant formulated to not damage oxygen sensors?

if youre using it on something like an intake manifold, where if a piece fell off it would actually change something in the combustion process.

valve cover gaskets have 0 to do with the intake tract

If silicone is present in the crankcase oil, oxygen sensors can fail. That is why some brands of synthetics are not approved for Mercedes engines, Silicone RTV sealing the covers could easily migrate to the engine oil. Also during the curing process the fumes can enter the opening to the intake manifold since the cover would be off.

Last fall I finally took mine in to have the leaky gasket fixed. They replaced both valve covers, and used new gaskets for both, and had gaskets for the smaller rocker covers. All work was done under warranty and didn't cost me a dime. No RTV was used anywhere.

As a sidenote......they went and powerwashed my engine compartment. It looked much nicer after they did that. It would have been nice if the guy who did it didn't stick his cigarette butt in the hood latch mechanism though.

I wonder if/what the part number would be for that gasket for the small covers on the top?? Did you get a list of part numbers used??

Are you saying they didn't take the valve covers off and replace the gaskets. They just put silicon around it? Did the replace the gaskets and use silicon?
