Default cold air intake ideas

So before spending a lot of money on an intake from say..Needswings

I thought I'd ask on some opinons for a DIY intake , came across a video on YouTube of a DIY intake I guess it could be considered a short ram

I'm sure this set up yields >2% gains but any gain is welcome and I'm itching to do something with my xf
Purchasing a coupler and a filter would only cost me about $40 a large savings in cash over Needswings , about 400$ and no shipping costs haha
Of course getting an aftermarket eBay brand wouldn't hurt right ?

It looks like a nice set up but real gains will be seen with the filter on the other side of the radiator. If you do something like this remember to take the stock filters out otherwise the air flow is super restricted. I've been looking at DIY intakes because of the cost difference for N/A engines. Dual intakes are not needed for N/A engines because they don't require that much air. From what I've read the Needswings Dual intake shaves off an extra .05 sec in comparision to the single in the quarter mile.

I'm looking into DIY intakes so that I can possibly reuse some piping when I upgrade later to the rear mount turbo in the future.

I know your supposed to run the intake through to be upfront ahead of the radiator , I know the Needswings kit comes with the tubing to clear that very tight gap from the engine bay to where the grill sits but I don't know how large of an area I would have to fit any tubes through

Any ideas ? I'll prolly end up re reading the diy on how to install a dcai maybe it tells you in there

I've been toying with the idea of pvc tubing.. pack it with sand and use a heat gun and bend it to shape, with a silicon T connected to the maf housing. Would be cheap enough to play with by all means..

Sounds like it would work , but that's an extra step requiring me to go to home depot and get a heat gun and a bag of sand lol

I just watched this video the guy uses the same bendable tubes that come on the stock intake , seems a little easier and cost effective

I also re read the intake diy and noticed It's done on an srt , now I've only opened my hood twice once to change and re align a light bulb and once to change the oil , where is the air filter in the NA or a general are for me to look ? Basically I'm asking what's different about the srt and the NA during an install

That dryer hose is not going to make for a smooth air flow by any means. NA filters sit towards the back of the engine cover.. four screws hold a case on each side that house the filters.

Just took a look at your gallery and the main thing to figure out is how to get the filters in front of the radiator, What did you use? There's no pics for that

His filters are inline, best way to go in my opinion.... But in reality there is a reason Needswings is so expensive.. You get what you pay for, seriously. If you draw in hot motor air then you wont net any gains at all, you will literally lose performance. Stock is already colder. The point to modify is to unrestrict and make the flow smoother, as well as getting the damn filters off of the heat soaking motor.

What's this ?
They are made by Spectre. "Inline Air Box". M/N 9833.
I removed the plastic baffle/feedthroughs to maximize the cross section and used 3" silicone on the passenger side and 2.75" silicone on the driver's.

The other thing is my $20 eBay oil catch can that I modified (with a lot of work) to actually work as it should. My mods to it are in the gallery too.
