yep.. not beyond going there. The way I see it though.. I spend a whole lot more time rolling down the road than sitting.

So with the Needswings single.. anybody actually monitored intake temps regularly? I would expect highway speed in current weather conditions to reach within 10 degrees over ambient.. just wondering if they actually go lower or actually show at ambient?

Todays trip home. Started logging while sitting in turnpike construction.

Single 3" HAI at drivers side and OEM on passenger side.

MM, looking at this, I would wait to make any decisions until the weather warms up. Take these same reading at ~ 85 degrees and see what you see?

JMHO, you understand?

Yes I do.
And quite frankly I will be shocked if the OEM setup becomes more efficient at cooling in warmer weather since it falls short under current conditions.
But time and spring will tell.

Ahh... and there in lies the perplexity of the situation..
Native Texan.. displaced at age 11
So being torn between roots and current location.. I went with orange instead of crimson .. LOL

Guess I could have gone OU instead.. they are 90% Texans anyways..

Longhorn emblems on my car most likely would end up with people signing my car ...

With a handy key..

Interesting turn of events..
After adding the second pipe and filter (passenger side), temps are running back in the +20
-25 range over ambient.

Hot spot over there?

This filter-tube setup is from another vender (first one was out of stock with no replinish plans) and it has a larger diameter filter and fit's closer to the radiator shroud so I'm wondering if it isn't pulling more from it since air is "pushed" into the edge...

I've currently only got one 70mm tube with filter on my intake.. waiting on UPS delivery tomorrow.. BUT temps have been running lower. Even after stopping at the store.. and sitting at a red light.. temps were 40 degrees over ambient. 4 miles down the road at 65 MPH temps dropped back to within 10 degrees of ambient.
So hate away.. but this beats stock intake hands down..
I just replaced the stock setup this weekend with a single NW CAI. What a difference in temps. My Auto Xray 6000 was reading 104* at idle. With the new setup I was at 57*-59* which was close to the outside temp of 54*. I always thought the stock setup was flawed sitting on the intake, I can only imagine what the temps would be like in summer. The car is actually fun to drive now and I don't even have a tune yet.

My temps are back at OEM setup AFTER adding the second tube to the stock housing on the passenger side. Playing with my own version of Devils horns ( parts got burned out Friday but never made it to my desk ..hmm..) Hopefully these will bring rolling temps down, but she does seem happier with the less restrictive intake even if it is warmer.

+3 to 5 over ambient?
This is sitting at idle after car has ran up to operating temp?

Yeppers Mr. Miata.

Hey thanks for all the effort on that Group purchase, I just finished making that order and it's a very good deal.

I'm fighting to keep my engine cover and keep them from being "rainseekers" sitting out in front.. LOL.

Group purchase.. I was just happy to see everybody jump on board so I didn't have to wait till the 4th of July sale! Like I've said.. I've put off doing anything "under the hood" waiting on the Turbo.. I'm past due on having extra power..

Can we get someone on here with a DIY CAI and get their input before I go jump on the needswings bandwagon? How close are they to ambient temps?

It's 80 here everyday in Guam and while it is nice and warm and there's 80+ miles of white sandy beach coast and clear blue water. My intake temps climb up to 150F and even with spirited driving on the back roads it's still 120-130F. I know I'll see huge improvements if I get this number as close as possible to ambient.

Mine keeps IAT within ~ 10-12 degrees F of ambient. Under all conditions, so long as I'm actually moving. Heatsoak is overcome within ~ 1 minute after I start moving again, due to the small mass of my components. Except, of course, for the SST y-pipe.

Let me clarify:

that 10-12 degrees is with an ambient of 90+.

I haven't made measurements at 50 F. I think there is a linear diversion as ambient temps rise.

Do you have a thread for how you made the DCAI?
