interior question.
the rubber paint **** they use on our interiors I noticed is starting to peel just beside my drivers seat on the arm rest area. im wondering if anyone has found/ used a chemical to strip this that wont damage the plastic beneath.
I would like to pull my whole interior out. get the rubber off. smooth it out and paint it all up
any ideas?

ask RUBY (rcompart)...... when they had JR Industries I had them paint my center console & center dash Aero Blue to match my exterior.... looks FANTASTIC...
I used alcohol, fingernails, elbow grease, down to the black plastic and re-dyed the pieces black using "forever black". if you don't mind those parts being black, it worked very well for me on my slk. keep in mind that for the best result you need to take the piece off the car, but be very carefull, especially with the instrument cluster surround.

6ʇɹsǝɹıɟssoɹɔ are you talking about the inner part that surounds the radio, heater controls and such (that Mike had painted) or the outer part that that mounts to the car and holds everything (the rubbery outer part)?
I'm thinking you mean the outer part. Mine is also showing wear and this may be an issue someday.

It's like an ultra-thin rubbery paint... horrible choice of materials from the factory if you ask me.
I have a tiny area where it's beginning to come off... only visible if you REALLY study it, so I can live with it for now. It's only near the E-brake handle so it's fairly concealed. No other imperfections found yet.
When that day comes, I'm thinking of getting all of the painted plastic covered in either a very thin leather, or a vinyl "pleather". Whichever one is the closest match to cedar. If I go that route, I'm going all out, and covering the slate areas in a black Alcantara.
For now, I'm being gentle with it and enjoying it.
