1st gear almost got me killed today!
Yup, I'm getting fed up with the XF and it's quirks. I was stopped at a corner red light, just waiting very patiently for traffic to clear. Down the road was a gold 3/4 ton silverado, It was far enough down the road to where I could blast out of the corner and quickly change lanes to get out of his way.
Well that plan didn't fall through the way I wanted it to, so I shifted into 1st and jabbed the throttle to the floor, then BAMMM it sounded like I broke an axle as the car vibrated violently. Freaking thing scared the **** out of me, and in the rear view I see this freight train of a truck baring down on me with horns blasting and headlights flashing. He must of been doing 50 mph and got that thing to stop with in 5 feet of my bumper, I quickly shifted into 2nd and stood on the throttle again to get the hell out of there.
This is probably the 7th or 8th time the tranny did this to me, but usually I would be at a stop light and as I would slowly accelerate with traffic, then, wham! there it goes again, backing up traffic while I get back in gear. I keep loosing 1st gear and it's making me stressed out, As John Wayne always said, " This is getting regodamndiculous!"
What's the deal with the rest of you guys, is this happening to you toot? I think we should file a lawsuit against DC, why can't I safely rely on my car to maneuver through traffic, without getting me killed, or is that what the side airbags are used for?

Is it popping out of first? There was a TSB I think on this, it was an issue brought up before. I've not been blessed with that issue.

my sixer has _never_ popped out of gear. hope you get it resolved... next time wait for the silverado to pass before you blast into its path.
Hehe, yeah I know but still the car should always shift consistently with less than 17,000 miles on it. This is a serious safety issue.
So far I can't find any TSB's on the popping gears, all I find are people complaining about hard shifting and greasing the splines on the shifter, but nothing about 1st gear letting go. https://www.crossfireforum.org/galler...php/photo/2839
I have heard of this similar thing happening on older BMW motorcycle's so most guys would end up buying new 1st and 2nd gears, and having them undercut, so that during acceleration the forces pull the gears together and not pushing them apart under load.
If this is the same problem the crossfire has with it's gear design, I don't think the dealer will ever get this problem fixed, but it seems like only a handful of people here on the forum have this same issue. I'll take it in tomorrow and see what my dealer says.

Been there and done that... my transmission was replaced in Jan '04 before the syncro TSB came out.
Much has been written on the subject. It was a known issue with cars built on or before Dec 2003. The original fix was to have the transmission replaced. Since then they do some work on the syncros.
I can't believe you've waited this long to address the issue. I took my car in the first time it popped out of gear.
The TSB Number is: 2100204, dated 05-03-2004
Good luck and keep us posted.

Like Patpur's Crossfire, mine's never popped out of gear even once in over 19K miles.
But as Ben47 pointed out about the build dates, mine was built in January 2004.
So check that build date DynamicS, and good luck.

I'm bringing the car in tomorrow, so no need to worry about me littering my intestinal fortitude all over the road.
I have a feeling it might have been built early in the year, maybe around late '03.

Another thing to note for people who have not already figured it out.
[soapbox]
When you are going around another vehicle in multiple lane traffic, invariably they WILL speed up. Maybe on purpose, maybe subconsciously. I have yet to nail down the reason.
All I DO know is that whenever I begin to go around someone in traffic in my Crossfire, they begin to speed up closing whatever opening was present for me to go through.
I've tried it calmly and aggressively, doesn't make a difference other than they can't cut me off if I pass aggressively.
Just tonight on my way home I got out of a lane behind a nice Porsche Carrera Roadster. There was plenty of space in front of him, over four car lengths. I began to pass him in a very civilized fashion and lo and behold he sped up, kept pace with my crossfire and prevented me from having any space to move into. This happened twice with the same Porsche. I swear it felt like he wanted me to jump on it just so he could see it happen.
[/soapbox]
Anyway, please be aware of these and other seemingly abnormal driving patterns around the aura of your Crossfire.

Well, I turned it into the dealer tonight, so it will probably be a week before I get to see it again. Driving to the dealer it was popping out of gear constantly, seems like it's getting worse than before. I hope I get a fresh tranny and not just new syncro's.
I was amazed to see so many crossfire owners down there at the dealership, seems they're also getting repair work done, one girl said she's having problems with the gas tank light coming on all the time, she said this is her third time trying to get it fixed.
I'm starting to get scared about leaving my car there...
Oh yeah, just for reference the build date on my XF is 07/03.
Where do I find the production number at??? Is it on the same placard?

Well I got the car back today, what a waste of time that was, Service manager said his best tranny guy made some adjustments to it, and he couldn't find any problems.
Well on the way back home I lost 1st gear about 4 times taking off from a stoplight.
On top of that they got grease on my headliner, and scratched the paint on the rocker panel and the stainless crossfire plate. This is very depressing. I think that after it's all straightened out I will be selling the XF.

Well I'm picking up the car today, seems I will have to wait one friggin month just so the dealer can purchase the replacement syncros and tools to do the job, then another week to do the work. I don't understand why they won’t replace the entire transmission, this would save the dealer so much more money in labor, compared to fixing the bad tranny. so friggin dumb!
The thing I find to be total BS is that the syncros have absolutely nothing to do with 1st gear popping out of engagement, all the synchro does is get the gears up to speed for shifting, I feel I'm being lied to now, it's ridiculous.
they’re lucky I have another car to drive in the meantime otherwise I'll be waging war on them!
