Oil change capacity
A couple of days ago i replaced the oil and filter, Even though the manual calls for 8.5 quarts (8 litres) of oil, by the time i put in 7.5 quarts it reached the mid level on the dip stick, the car is on a level service and i have rechecked the level after a couple of short drives. Can any one else share their experiences. thank you
Check level again after sitting, or you didn't get all out. You should havegotten at least 8 out. If you changed to a good filter (fleece) and used the Mobil 1 0-40, and everything checks out OK with the oil level, don't sweat it... should be fine ...... there's my $.02
EDIT: don't forget to change the FSS

Nashville,
Had exact same scenario with dealers mechanic when I pointed out to the service writer that the work order and owners manual had different quantites for oil capacity (work order 7.5 qts, owners manual 8.5 qts.). Was told the manual was in error. After oil and filter change mechanic pulled dip stick with engine running. Oil level was mid way between FULL and EMPTY ???? Oil was gravity drained via oil pan drain plug.

And as a general rule of thumb, it's better to be a little low on oil level than over full. Over full typically increases the likelhood of foaming, which can lead to major engine problems. Not sure if that still holds true for the synthetics, but the dino oils with detergent additives can really 'foam up' with increased agitation.
Another interesting fact is that most synthetic oils, if spilled, will clean up easily using nothing more than soap & water. That's a little scary, when you think about it!
I've changed my oil 3 times now, always use only 8 quarts. If you put in 8.5 quarts, you will often have a high oil alarm during your more "spirited" driving.
With all the lateral G's that I try to pull, I fill the oil to the top of the mark on level ground. When I got a lot of oil on the side of the pan, I want to keep the pickup covered, so I run max level on the dip stick, cold.
With all my cars I have never see oil damage an engine if too high, though it will drain out of the seals, bad for standard transmissions. Even ran a pan evacuation system (partial vacuum) for a while to reduce the air pressure in the engine to reduce power losses and cherning of the oil due to windage losses.
Once blew a oil pump relief spring in my 406 T bird, and had to go 50 miles, so I added about 6 extra quarts to splash lube the engine, and when I got it apart the next day bearings were fine. THe mechanical pressure gauge read zero.zero the whole way home.
On the other hand with a stock oil level I have had the oil light go on on a ramp leading to 495 in Gaithersburg with a great banked turn as the oil puddled up across from the pickup ( right handed turn ) on a wild 153CID Iron duke 4 cyclinder at about 6000. Got spirited leaving IBM back in the day, and the turn was soooo sweet. Shifted to over-fill 1 qt in all cars since then, in everything.
My super 60 daytona had a baffeled pan with scrapers and 8 quarts with long pick-up and windage tray for 7500 revs on the autocross circuit. Oil is cheap, and necessary.
For my 440 6pack challenger I welded up a 2 quart accumulator storage tank so I can open it and get 20# of oil pressure before the starter turns, car is a hanger / garage queen and the bearings sit dry for weeks or months at a time.
9 quarts on board, and a 7 quart pan.

Me I believe in full up oil levels.
