Need Help With Rear Differential Issue
I have that howling noise in the rear differential and it is getting pretty bad even on acceleration now. I had my warranty company take a look at it and they said they wont cover it until I pay a repair shop to tear it down and show the parts have a failure in some way. My question is will you be able to see if there is a failure to the parts that is making the howling noise? Or would I be wasting my money having a repair shop tear it down for the warranty company to take a look at it? Thanks - Tim
Hah I wish it was that easy but warranty companies try to get out of covering it anyway they can lol Im just trying to figure out will there be noticible damage or worn down parts that would explain the howling noise getting worse thanks
Ask your question of the repair shop, they can pull the plug out and see the oil color in 1 minute and with experience tell you , also do a test drive to get their opinion for free. Woody

New parts are required no matter the initial cause. A noise from the diff requires immediate repairs.
Worth a shot :
go to Blackstone Labs and get a free test kit, send a sample of the diff oil and for a mere $25 they will report the metal content and many other things.

Am I the only one that sees a very grey area here for the insurance company? "Pending failure" vrs. covered repair..
All parts on the car are a pending failure..
After my daughters heated seats shorted and caught fire..YES - CAUGHT FIRE.. and the extended warranty company covered the repair.. OF THE HEATER ELEMENT ONLY.. I just have little faith in anything short of black and white.

I don't.. they'd be pissed at me by now..

Usually I agree with your assessments, but sometimes I just don't know where you are coming from ......
When my rear end howls, it's from eating beans...but when the car rear end howls, it's time to tear into it, and get it repaired....so the answer is yes, they will be able to find what was causing the howling and the warrranty/insurance will have to pay up less your deductable...
No, Dave, you PARK the house so the fire doesn't spread, and send off for a RECOGNIZED second opinion that you might well be able to leverage with the insurance company.

You know something is wrong and there will be metal that much is obvious, why waste time when you know the result you will get back.
Do you call them when your wife is cooking and there is smoke in the house?
( although I was quite surprised by Dell : I called them yesterday to have a new keyboard put in my wife's XPS laptop, they responded with "We'll have someone out tomorrow, and he will replace the keyboard, the main board and the cooling fan also, all under warranty"
( I had mentioned that it also got quite hot at times )

As usual.
I'm sure they'll cover the tow bill and repair once there is an actual failure to fix.
Like I say, otherwise your wanting them to fix a potential failure based on "it makes a noise".. no component has actually "failed" as of yet.
I'd bet on a wreck or sale before a repair if I was the warranty provider..LOL.

If a bearing has failed and the gears are out of alignment as a result the gears will get a bad mesh pattern on them if driven too far and a new bearing would only quieten the noise. The insurance company would probably only pay for a new bearing and not the damaged parts caused by the failure based on previous posts.
Shameless plug:
I have a good spare differential unit for sale if you end up needing one.

The price is $325. I don't know how to change the title of the thread.

Thanks for all the replys, I think I got my question answered, I found a transmission and differential shop that will do the work, My insurance company told me when they tear it down they will send out an inspector and if the parts are damaged in some way and noticible they will pay for the tear down and whatever parts need to be replaced, So by your responses there should be something noticible that is causing the really bad howling noise either the bearings, gears, etc. Thanks for the help once again from the Crossfire Community
