t-stat
i have seen a bunch of guys putting 160 t-stat's on ls1's and other big motor cars. i think it means 160 degree thermostats. these guys claim that it ups power a little. people do it to grand cherokee's too, i used to have one and guys always did it on those forums. anyone know about this?

You could probably get away with a 10 - 20 degree cooler thermostat. You've got to be careful with that, though, because if you go too cold you can actually overheat the motor because you won't be allowing sufficient time for the coolant to cool in the radiator before being cycled through the engine again.
BTW - what is the stock temperature on the thermostat?

It might... I'm not sure how closely the crossfire's ECU monitors that sort of thing. Less sophisticated cars (meaning, fewer electronics) have gotten away with running several degrees cooler, but I'm not sure how the MB electronics would take to that sort of thing.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that car's engines were designed to run at a specific temperature. The Crossfire's engine seems to run a little hot compared to some other cars... but in this application, that is perfectly acceptable.

hmm... chipping it usually increases the temp. I remember reading on the Upsolute FAQ page. They said the following:
The temperature can rise a very small amount (racing conditions). In average, this are between 5-8 degrees

you can probably get way with it... I also have a LT1 supercharged Corvette I run a 180 in it, the performance gains you would get quite honestly are negligable...
I haven't logged the Crossfire intake temperatures, but finding a way to chill the intake charge would probably warrant more performance than the thermostat would... There are a few folks working on that mod.
hope this helps,

a t-stat does not change the temp of the incoming air...where the concept of cooler/denser air will yield more hp. The t-stat decides when to open and allow the engine coolant to enter the radiator. So on a hot running engine, the lower temp t-stat will open earlier, but once it's open, the engine could still run just as hot as before. Hence, the point about seeing negligible hp increase due to lower t-stat.
