I repaired my broken fob this morning and it all went well.

There is a LED behind the red lens and it lights up when you change the door unlocking/locking sequence, that's the drivers side only or all doors unlocking on one press of the button. The LED is the white component on the front of the circuit board behind the red lens.

Pressing both the lock and unlock buttons and holding them down until the red lens lights up will reverse the set up you have at present. You have to be near the car to do this.

No big deal, just curious

I do not think IR is used at all; there is the LED for battery testing and the door unlocking mode selection and the transponder that reacts with the 'Halo' ring around the ignition switch. The transmitter in the fob unlocks the doors. All signals would be radio signals.

That's my understanding, but I have been wrong before.

Ooops....

At least it was the useless FOB from the crossfire that got totaled two and a half years ago. Randomly found it this week and wanted to see if I could open it up and change cases with my SRT FOB that has a broken key ring portion...FAIL

Not to worry, in a short time it will be cheaper to buy a Crossfire with two keys than to buy a new key from the dealer.

Felt like something to do, so I made the first post in this thread into a PDF file.

I am curious about this"Halo" ring. Is it supposed to light up? If so, then mine isn't working

No light and if your car starts it's working.

OK folks, I bought an empty FOB on ebay. This FOB is a direct match for our car. Lock, Unlock and Panic with the red window for the LED. I followed the instructions above and I now have a new looking key. I reused the key blade and all the guts. It was not easy to get the old FOB apart but with a little patients and nervous sweat, I got it apart. I did not glue the new FOB together - just snapped it. I told the guy to add the Crossfire to his list of compatible vehicles but I'm not sure if my email translated to Chinese. Do a ebay search on the below:

98-04 MERCEDES-BENZ SLK-CLASS FLIP KEY KEYLESS REMOTE FOB CASE FREE INSTRUCTION

I did this today and all did not go well. I followed the instructions to the letter, however, when I inserted a knife into the original fob to pop it open, a little black box that looks like a cover on a component on the circuit board popped loose. I examined the circuit board and thought I could replace the cover with super glue. I did that, and put the "new" fob back together. When I tested the new fob there was no response, the led light worked just like before but the car would not lock or unlock nor would the panic button work. My dire conclusion is I damaged the circuit board and I will have to buy a new key. Anybody have any suggestions before I cough up a hundred dollars for a new key? I have a picture of the fob with a red line pointing to the box in my gallery - (I still don't know how to insert pictures in a post.) Any help would be appreciated

I did a little bit of searching and pulled this up.. (we know how fun the search is.. lol)

The xFire owner's manual describes the re-program remote procedure - you have to do it when you change the key fob batteries so don't let the dealer take your $ for something you can do yourself !

So I have to wonder could you buy and use a "complete" fob from ebay and just change out the transponder and metal key?

And here's a possible $15 dollar shot at it.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-2006-CH...a9da7e&vxp=mtr

And I believe I had read about an slk320 fob working.. might want to research that.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/98-04-MERCED...9fff05&vxp=mtr

Thanks Mrmiata for your response to my call for help! I'm going to try that reprogramming today, didn't want to do it last night in case my alarm went off when I opened the door.

This is the fob I transferred my circuit board to, my original Chrysler fob was worn and the red panic button was broken out, so I thought I would "upgrade" to the Mercedes Benz key fob -- thanx for your suggestions.

So can we assume that all is working now?

I would suggest that you keep the [ quote=xxxx] and [/quote ] intact at the beginning and end of the quote to prevent the message becoming messed up. I added spaces in the ones above to break the code so they printed normally.
