Question re: Sticky Ignition Key Fix for all Crossfires 2004 thru 2006

Today our 2003 dodge Dakota deliver pickup we found that the ign key would not turn to the on position, goggled this problem, found post to insert key and tap on key with a rubber hammer, did not have RBH used a screwdriver and bam it turned, has anyone tried this with the xf problem? Just a thought by the way i had my ign modified before it happened to me

Please note in our experience, Great Lakes Crossfire Owners group, the 2008 cars did not have the spring/pin to remove for the "Sticky Key" fix. Two members took their cars apart today, got the ignition assembly apart, opened the metal cover to find nothing. To my eye it looked like the inside had been redesigned and I didn't think to get a picture of it, very sorry. If I owned a 2008 I would see if the part number for the ignition assembly 2004-2008 changed. In other words was there a new part who's number supersedes the earlier number. My guess is 2008 will be an updated number.

Pictures of an 2008 dash, drivers side, taken apart are on the Facebook Chrysler Crossfire Owners page. The 08 had an airbag, 2 extra bolts, 4 retaining clips and screw #4 was "hidden".

I am in the middle of this procedure and made it to the end where the assembly is out and the latch is open. When I opened the latch, I did not see a pin or spring. My question is how obvious is this spring and pin? Will it shoot out of the opening once the latch is open? I'm guessing either I've done something wrong or the previous owner has already completed it. Thanks to anyone with info.

If there is no spring or pin under the cover then you can be assured the PO removed it.

So it would be obvious after opening latch? No sticking punch pin inside to wiggle out or anything like that? By the way, thanks for responding 180.

If the PO was there before you the cover would be really dented up because the same cover goes back on at the end of the procedure.

A group in southern michigan found two 2008's that didn't have the pin! I wonder if Laminad's car (if it is not a 2008) has had a replacement ignition lock put in and I wonder when the mfr. started leaving out the precious pin & spring? The pin that would come out would look like these..... https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...68269208_n.jpg or this one.... https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...73855135_n.jpg

I had forgotten this, it arose earlier. I will remember in the future.

It's a 2005. The latch was intact when I reached it. It surely isn't now since I finagled with it. I didn't remember seeing much tampering of the area so I'm wondering also if it was a complete replacement without the pin. Thanks again for the help.

I took advantage of the good weather today. It took about an hour on my '04. One thing I didn't see mentioned that it makes it easier to see the release pin if your telescopic wheel is pulled all the way out.

I just did mine today. Thanks to those who figured this out and their excellent photos. Two things can make this a bit easier.

1. Drilling out the steering lock pin can be a pain due to its location, alternatively one can drill or grind a path from the hole where the pin goes into the steering column to the end of the sheath. That allows one to remove the ignition lock console without the difficulty of drilling the hard steel pin itself.

2. There is no need to remove the tumbler at all. One just needs to remove the ignition lock console open the hatch in the back of it and remove that nasty pin and spring and everything will work fine.

I personally did not cut off the end and did not have to drill the pin out so mine is stock except for the removal of the spring and pin - I have not had any sticky problems since and no other indication that it doesnt work 100%. I don't know the exact function of the parts but after more than a couple months and more than a few bumps it still works like a new one.
Hi I want to follow your lead. if I want to remove the pin and spring. Do I just follow the sticky picture thread. But skip the pin cutting?
Thnks

Mine was getting a hitch in it so since I couldn't do myself due to back issues I had a local shop replace the ignition housing with a new one I provided (I did the mod on it first) for $190.00. No problem now! smooth as butter! I realize I didn't need to replace it but I already had the part so what the heck.

minor update in v4 found in post #429. On step 6, removing screws # 1 & 3 are optional, brought to my attention by onehundred80.
