Metal will shield or reflect radio waves. I don't think the valve stem type is an issue since the radio waves travel through the rubber tire anyway. Think of the inside of the wheel as a huge reflector aiming the radio waves out through the tire.
Apologies for the late update. Good news! VDO REDI-sensor TPMS parts successfully replaced, synced to the tricky '05 Crossfire, no more dash error light, $380.19 total:
1. $80.99 per sensor (VDO REDI-sensors, Part #SE10004A) recommended by the new tire installer, Lanier Tire. I paid "more" and went with their recommendation because their work was guaranteed (versus ME trying to choose between one of two possible Schrader parts for the '05). So, total with tax installed was $348.26 (again, accomplished along with new tire installation). The tire dealer initially thought they could sync the VDO's to the car, but they could not.
2. Previously, I had called multiple Chrysler dealers for quotes on syncing the new TPMS sensors to the car (first making sure each had the required syncing tool, #DRB3/DRBIII). They were all pretty much mystified by my request, so quotes ranged from $59 to $115. SO, after the new sensors and tires were mounted, I just drove to my preferred dealer (that had quoted me two wildly different prices on two different phone calls) without an appointment. They put me in the “fast service lane.” Nobody knew what to do. Nobody knew what prices had been quoted. I was told they serviced maybe two Crossfires a year. The service manager (and seemingly everyone else) got involved. You would have thought I was driving a Ferrari FF because I went straight to the front of the line. Long story short, the dealer DID sync the new VDO’s to the car and charged me only $31.93! I was elated to see the dash light off! They were elated to see me leave.

And have you tested each tire to see if they are actually working? Deflate, check dash, inflate, etc.
Update March 19th 2015
The 20028 has been fitted and programed by the Chrysler dealer only and found to work fine, the 20066 model has not yet been tried and proven. Make sure you get the correct part, 20028 or 20066 as either are possible.
A-Programming Tool Required B-Magnet Required to Activate Sensor C-20018 and 20008 are interchangeable.
Original post Schrader lists the following parts for the Crossfire (Coupe, Limited and SRT6);
Schrader #20028 for '04, '06,'07, and '08 for $49.99 plus service kit #20003 for $2.99 This replaces OEM part #5096808AA
Schrader #20028 (see above) or #20066 for '05 (Limited and SRT6) for $65.99 plus service kit #20013 for $5.24 These replace OEM parts #5096808AA or #5142340AA respectively.
The '05s and '05 SRT6 could have either sensor in them so check carefully.
The OEM numbers listed above are for the sensors only, there are other OEM numbers out there and I think those are for the complete sensor assembly consisting of the sensor, the nut and the cap.
The service kit has the rubber seal for the rim, valve, nut and cap.
DO NOT BUY THEM FROM A STEALERSHIP
These part numbers are to be used carefully, different sites have shown various numbers but the ones above seem to be consistent. In other words buyer beware. Check exactly what you are replacing, if the dealer gives you the wrong part it is his fault, you buy the wrong part and you may end up eating the cost.
Universal sensors are replacing the multitude of sensors on the market, the sensor available now only replaces one of the two types used on the Crossfire. This would be some of the 05's and some of the SRT's.
The following sensors (EZ Sensor) have NOT been proven to work, stay with the AirAware sensors, 20028 does work, 20066 is not proven yet from info gleaned on this forum.
Schrader EZ-sensor #33000 EZ-sensor - Quick Start Guide This sensor comes with two options, snap in or clamp in stems. Crossfires use the clamp in stem which is the metal. stem. The stem is screwed to the sensor and is replaceable. The 33000 only replaces one of the two sensors used on the Crossfire, the 5142340AA (20066). This is the sensor used on some 05's and some SRT6's.
We have a report in the crossfire Facebook group that this cloneable type sensor works on the crossfire...

Yes, the stem with cap is the antenna. Do not paint or cover it up in any way. Also, I understand there are TWO different 'systems' in our crossfires (frequency). Make sure the stems match the frequency of the receiver before you buy them. I also heard (have not confirmed, as mine are bypassed forever) that some of the replacements are able to be used with either receiver (dual transmit frequencies, selectable after install). Good luck!

Question 2: I just had the tire store guy read me the numbers off of my black srt 05 TPMS and it doesn't seem to correspond with any part number. The number he read to me was 06013099. Did he read me the wrong number? Thanks in advance.

They were different frequencies, 315and 433 of the top of my head.
That number does not match to any number I have found but one of the two OEM numbers ends in ....990.

These are the Mopar 433mhz sensors that I put in my 2005 NA and SRT. Do all 4....if one is bad most likely all will go out sooner. I believe the battery lasts about 10 years. I got 4 Mopar for $120.

Thats not a bad price, but what concerns me is the date on the package in the ad, it has a date of 2012 which tells me for 5 bucks more I can have Schrader with a 2016 date on it. Good luck with those.
So, if the two frequencies used in 05 were different, and if the frequency of at least one of the wheels is transmitting and can be read by the "magic wand" at the stealership, which they just said they would do at no charge, then I should be able to order the correct sensor without having to break down the tire (again) to read the number off of the sensor. Yes?
