Is This A Can Of Worms, Which Radar Detector Do You Use?
I personally like the Cobra series. Some of the models tote the anti-anti radar detection and it's reliable for about 3-5 miles. Some of the newer models can sync up to your phone and other owners can input where cops are hiding. They don't really work against the guns though (Can't beat the speed of light). I've heard there are license plate covers you can buy which will absorb or dissipate (I'm not sure which) the gun's beam which will give you a second or 2 to hit the breaks after the radar is detected (They target your license plate for best results). But I don't know if they work. Never tested mine yet.
It's not an air tight strategy. So I like to pace other cars so the police can't identify me as having the radar detector.

I'll start by saying I use an Escort 9500I and it's awesome - it's got less memory than the top-of-the-line IX for a speed camera database I never use, but it has GPS, which is really handy for me (as I drive past 5+ speed signs a day and there's one right outside my front yard).
I'd check out sites like radartest.com - despite my doubts about his claimed impartialness in reviews, the basic information there is really well-presented and sound. Just keep in mind that he both sells detectors and consults for the companies that make them, so he definitely has an interest in pushing more expensive detectors.
You'll want to learn if your local cops use K-band, Ka-band, or X-band (unlikely), how often they use laser or VASCAR/planes, and if laser jammers are legal in your area.
The Escort 8500 and up or new Beltronics models and new Valentine Ones are very comparable in performance. Beltronics and Escort/Passport are the same thing - rebranded cases around one company's product. Cobra supposedly makes detectors that aren't garbage now, but they make a lot of bargin-basement Wal-Mart stuff you probably want to avoid as well - they have a few good products but you have to know which ones to look at.
You should decide whether or not you want an installed system (mega $$$ but hidden), whether or not you want laser jammers (illegal in most places nowadays but handy where they're not), and whether or not you want GPS (awesome because it lets you lock out speed signs / automatic door openers, but carries a price premium), and go from there.

Personally I have used Valentine One units in all of my vehicles for many years. I know that some of the latest model radar / laser detectors have more bells & whistles (GPS and so forth) but for reliable advance warning covering all radar bands and laser, I highly recommend Valentine One. Another advantage with Valentine is that if / when Valentine develops an upgraded unit, you can trade your older unit in for the upgraded model (kind of a lifetime guarantee that you can always run with the most advanced Valentine unit). Check them out at www.ValentineOne.com.
Historically, travelers had to defend themselves against armed highway robbers. Today our police have become the armed highway robbers! It's got NOTHING to do with safety . . . it's all about collecting money and fleecing the motoring public. Protect yourself or pay up!

Seen the movie Fantastic 4 ?
Flame on boys..
Does the job for me but I couple it with common sense. Front doors.. known hot spots..etc.
You might even want to read the reviews on it. One owner has a Valentine too.. and is perfectly satisfied with this unit.

I have 2 Escort 8500 x50's They work great and:
RadarTest.com - Best radar detector reviews from the world's most respected authority.
Read away, buddy...
Escort, Valentine and Beltronics (same as Escort) are worth the $$.
$40 doesn't get you much.

OK, after getting my first XF speeding ticket (81 in a 60) my question is what radar detector do you guys use, like, or want in your XF? There are a whole lot of different models and features out there, and I have no idea what the local three police departments use in their cars. Confusing to say the least, hope it doesn't turn into a 'what oil is best for my XF' posting. So, a can of worms opened?
Need to read up on the bel sti, its the best overall and has NO emissions to be detected by the anti anti crowd. Its like attitudes, everyone has one best answer, do your homework first. Woody
I don't use my detector that often so I didn't feel the need to shell out for the really expensive ones. I have a Whistler. Read the reviews on Radartest.com and they were the best midrange priced detector. Cost me about $160 with shipping I think. Excellent Ka range (over 20,000 feet and the best laser detection for the price.
Most law enforcement agencies are switching to lidar, which operates at the speed of light. A lidar detector will not help you, its like hearing a gunshot. By the time you hear it you're already dead.
I suggest one of these, pretty expensive though.
Laser Interceptor - The Ultimate Laser Jammer - Official Website - Exclusive Factory Authorized Distributor to The USA and Canada - Home
They are the only USA brand that works except for blinder, be wary of everything else. Also make sure they are legal were you live. I believe the blinder is a lot cheaper, but only works well on smaller cars. It would probably work well on a crossfire. Most of these also detect radar, but don't jam it.
