Gas Mileage - Auto vs Manual
Hey guys, so I'm thinking of getting a crossfire, and I was wondering about the gas mileage difference between the automatic and manual crossfires. For some reason, fueleconomy.gov rates the manual worse than the auto. That's not right, is it? I'm wondering because I make a lot of trips out to see my parents (about 200 miles each way, and I travel it about once or twice a month), and I really need a car with about 30 mpg. I tend to travel at about 80 mph on the highway. What kind of speed is the 6th gear on the manual set for? Does it run well at 80 mph, and is it revving very much? I'm looking for as fuel efficient as possible, and I don't mind the engine running really low, even lugging it. Also, what fuel grade are you guys using? Does the crossfire handle 87 or 89 octane well, or does it actually need 91 or 93 like the manual states. Just some questions, I've got my eye on a black on black 04 coupe, 6 speed with about 40k miles for $9,999. I think she's a beauty, so if this car gets reasonably good mpg, I might drive out and take a look. Thanks for your help guys!
i'm getting almost 24 in town, on my 06 NA Ltd autostick, and fully expect 30 or better on the road, but I usually drive about 70 OTR.
the manual is about 1 mpg less than the auto, and if you're up around 80 it will be less. Just like my motorcycle, they tend to be geared for efficiency around the 60-70 mph range, that;s just the way it is.
i've used the 87 or 89 octane and the cross seems to be just as happy with that-no loss of power or MPG, but because the price differential is so low I generally feed her 91. Our octane numbers are lower than other parts of the world for equivalent quality, so an 87 may actually equate to 91 in Europe or Asia. This is a fact as I've learned about my motorcycles I've had. But the Cross does seem ok with 87 at the pump. 110K for that car seems a good overall price. You will love that car.

use 91 or higher, cheaper gas saves you at the pump but you get less performance and less mileage since everything for timing and all have to be changed and yield less mpg.
i have an 08 manual and get around 20-23 mixed, on highway i get around 28mpg if going around 80mph, if i can around 65mph i get up to 30mpg-31mpg.
auto sucks unless and srt, manual is much more fun and responsive.

In four years of (summer) driving I consistently get 27-28 mpg calculated on midrange gas. That's a lot of highway at 70-75 with occasional bursts to much higher. One afternoon I took a back highway cruise at 55-65 and turned just over 30.
All I can tell you, it's worth giving up 1 mpg to have the fun of a stick.

well then in that case why buy an auto lol first gear is bearable in slow traffic between 5-15 mph.

Caution Douglas
Some that posted are the mystical high MPG guys. AMX rules with incredible numbers.
You would be very fortunate if you could match their mileage. There seems to be small percentage of cars that get a lot better mileage then the rest of us. It has been talked about many times and there seems to be no obvious explanation.
I think I'm probably closer to normal for an auto, 21 city, 25 highway. We are intimidated and fail to post after seeing the high numbers.

I have an '05 6-speed and usually get 28-29 mpg mixed city highway, but this is probably due to the higher elevation here; 4600-5000 ft. I made a round trip to Phoenix recently, 427mi and it took 13.1 gallons, works out 32.6 mpg. Not bad considering I was doing between 85 and 90 when possible, and I was stuck in a traffic jam for about an hour, getting 0 mpg. So fuel economy is going to depend on where you live, weather conditions, and driving style.

If you want good gas mileage, get yourself an economy cage. If you want to put a smile on your face despite frequent fillups then buy this car. But for heaven's sake, if you get a Crossfire, please don't drive it like a weinie.
No way I'd give up a good romp with the car to gain a few mpg - sacrilege!
I have pathologically checked my gas mileage on almost every tankful of every car I've owned for the last 30 years....(same brand of calculator watch & resetting the trip meters & filling up almost to overflow)....while at the same time hitting almost 100 mph at least once per day......? Maybe I'm bipolar????
I use BP premium (92) from a station that the owner tells me has no ETOH in it.
I typically get 23.7-25.4 mpg from the 07 6 speed.......I did get over 26 mpg on one tankful when I consciously tried to drive nicely. The worst tank (=the most fun) was like 22.5 mpg.
On my wife's 08 automatic .....(<2000 miles on odometer)....best was 25.5....worst was 22.1.
Over the course of a full year I'd say these 2 cars both ave 24 mpg.
I'm considering hypnosis or psychiatry to make me stop measuring mpg....so that I can just enjoy the speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We recently did a trip to southeast Oklahoma for some twisty road fun. For the overall trip, including some high revs on the TaliMena drive, we averaged 26.3 miles to the gallon in our SSB 6 speed
.
I've been consistantly getting between 25 and 27MPG in my '06 6-speed coupe, mostly on my daily commute which is predominantly on an interstate (but during rush hour). I've done a little better than 27MPG on occasion, and a lot worse (when I'm showing off to friends).
My window sticker for my 2005 6MT is rated at 17 City and 25 HWY. This is pretty on par with what you can actually expect to get, you will do better sometimes, never worse. I would not put 'cheap' gas in the car, yes it will still run fine, but with the amount of correction the computer has to do, you will be actually hurnting erformance and MPG, so pony up.
You are buying a $35,000 car and you must realize that, even if you can pick up one for under 10K. The oil changes are expensive ($125-$150) and the parts are expensive, but the value for your dollar you are getting is truly second to none. As 'bat' said, you buy an XF to drive spiritedly, it is NOT designed to be a commuter car. Good luck, do your research and make a educated decision, I do not want to see you on here in a month trash talking the XF LOL.
