Problems I can't figure out
I have this thump thump sound coming from the rear (not sure left or right) and it speeds up the faster I move. The dealer said it was the type of tire, so i got a whole new set of michelin pilots ($1400) and still the problem persists. Discount tires said the wheels are not bent. Im aware that my rear brakes are low, but would that cause the pins in the pad to rub on the rotar causing that kind of sound?
Also since getting new tires my TPMS has been on, I brought it back to discount tires, they scanned each wheel and the light went off for a day. Now its back on, so they replaced the sensor that might have been low on battery and the lights still on. Im thinking i need to have the dealership reprogram all TPMS. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Andy

I'm not sure about the thumping sound but your problem with the TPMS could be one of the individual unit within the wheel. Those are pretty easy to break when getting new tires put on. A dealer or a good shop should be able check each wheel to see if one is broken. But before you do that check the pressure on each wheel to make sure you don't have a leak.
Interesting problem. I have had flat spots develop in the tires after it is parked for a while, but the uneven ride goes away after a few miles and the tires warm up. There is no noticeable thump-thump. I would expect rubbing brake parts to be more of a grinding sound. If they are rubbing, you should be able to find shiny, raw metal somewhere. The only other rotating parts back there are the driveshaft and the differential. I never had a problem with either so not sure how to troubleshoot. Good luck and let us know what you find.
Just a thought, do you have stock, or aftermarket wheels (can't tell from your sig)
In some case when aftermarket wheels are fitted, the wheel bolts are too long and protrude into the rear emergency brake drum, and catch on the shoes/linkage inside ..................

Make sure the lugs are correct and tight. Check the wheel bearings. Check for a loose shock. I doubt if it's the brakes. Most likely not the wheel bearings. A loose shock will thump but shouldn't speed up. Since you replace your tires I don't think you have something stuck in one of them. How about the center bearing on the driveshaft? I'm just throwing the possibilities out there and it's up to you to check them out.

^^^ that is what I was just thinking... the carrier bearing. Rob had one go out on him... he carries them on his site.

Hope your's is nothing serious.
Thanks guys,
I still havent found the problem. I called the dealer to inquire about getting new brakepads and having the rotars turned down but they refused to turn them since i have 100k miles. They said i have to buy new rotars ($75 each). Thats pretty rediculous imo, they havent been turned down before.
Are there any directions on installing that driveshaft bearing?
I think first ill put on new brakepads myself and go from there. Something has to be done, the thumping is driving me nuts and im not enjoying the ride anymore.
BTW everything is stock on the car, its an 04.
Thanks,
Andy

I would have a hard time believing my rythmic sound isn't the tires but I haven't checked anything out yet either. There's now issues with shifting, no lag or clunk, no wobbles or rough ride, nothing to indicate any issues other than noise. Reading other threads, given the width of these tires, the type of tire, etc --- it seems it just may be that they are noisey.
I would get the balancing of each wheel/tire assembly double checked. I'd be there to watch it being done, too. A bent rim doesn't necessarily result only in a "wobble". Hitting a good sized pothole can bend a rim so that it develops a "hop". Sometimes the wheel doesn't wobble and it can be successfully balanced. Still, if it has been smacked and has a hop in it on the balancing machine it can otherwise seem to be fine. An untrained eye might not catch it or worse, an untrained operator might not worry about a "hop" if the rim/tire assembly can be successfully balanced. In my experience that kind of hop, if it exists, is not the tire.
It doesn't mean that the wheel needs to be replaced either. Usually the rim can be straightened.
Keep us all posted on this issue that you're having, please.

you have over 100K on the rotors, and have never had a wheel bearing go out, that, my friend, you can call yourself lucky. I didn't look to see what you are driving, an N/A or an SRT, but I wouldn't bulk at getting some new rotors. I would have them check the wheel bearings as well. Check for "play" in the driveshaft both coming out of the tranny, and the rear end. That's a lot of miles.
Did you ever figure out what the problem was on your car. I have the same issue with rythmic noise, longer sound each rotation when going slower and more like a quick thumping at highway speeds. It's really pronounced between 20-30 KM per hour almost like a deep noise vibrating through the car you can really hear it, I can't even really tell if it's coming from the front or back but I suspect it may be the back.
Same noise if brakes are on or off, just coasting in neutral makes the same noise. Brakes do not vibrate at all when applied and pads are thick, Rotors look good.
A bit of vibration in the wheel starting at 80K and up to highway speeds but not horrible.
When I bought the car in the sproing this year there were aftermarket rims with a bigger center bore and no hub centric rings, I have put the hub centric rings in now and that reduced some other shaking the car had. I tested the oiginal rims & tires on the back and the noise remains exactly the same so I have ruled out the tires & rims for the back.
I was thinking wheel bearings but I believe when wheel bearigns are bad they make noise that is like a constant hum and not only every tire rotation? Is that correct? Wondering if the fact they ran non hubcentric rims for a couple of years screwed yup the wheel berings making them sound like that or messed up something eles I'm nothinking of? Is there a wy to test & se if the wheel berings are bad?
I read in this thread about he drive shaft bearing (hanger bearing I think), anyone now how would I test that to see if it is the problem?
Thanks for any help.

Just a suggestion ( what I would do ) :
Jack both rears up and place on jack stands, chock the fronts.
DO NOT GO UNDER CAR UNLESS ON JACK STANDS !!! - I did that once and was almost killed.
Put it in neutral, and have someone turn the rears by hand while you skinny under and listen real good.
Even better yet is to locate some place with a lift that leaves the wheels free, most tire places have this and slip them a few bucks for 10 minutes or so of lift time.
