Even if the second key doesn’t start the car you should be able two pair it to use the keyless entry function if it had previously been paired with that car .
No if the transponder don't work you couldn't synchronize the remote with the car. If you are able to synchronize the first key (what starts the car) pusch the open button 5 times and within 5 sec put the key in the ignition switch and go to pos2 there are a few shops who can make you a third key of a fully funktional key.
Can you lock and unlock the doors using the buttons on the center consul? Have you done the reprogramming procedure for the key fob after ensuring batteries were good? I am not an expert by any means, but if you have a key that starts the car you shouldn’t have to do anything with the ... If the console button works you could rule that out. It is odd that the second key would not start the car unless the transponder chip was removed or lost when changing the shell. I am wondering if the locking and unlocking functions could be related to the body controlModule
Thanks to you both for your responses. Two more things I just confirmed are:
1. The second key has no transponder chip. The dealership also confirmed they only used that fob as a service key.
2. The console lock button does not work. Will have to chase that down as well.
I REALLY APPRECIATE your guidance! Many thanks! John
Thanks for all of this exchange on this confusing, but important topic. I have two fobs. Neither of them opens the doors remotely or locks them. Both fit in the ignition and turn, but only one starts the car. I believe throughout all of this I have no way to lock the trunk as there is no trunk key. Am I screwed or does Needswings's skreem refurbishment and key rework service prove me (a costly) solution?
Can you lock & unlock the doors/hatch using the key itself in the driver's door handle? I think turning the key to the right will unlock the driver's door. Turning it to the right again will unlock the passenger door, fuel fill door & hatch. Turning it to the left will lock all doors & hatch. Might be the other way around; haven't done this in awhile. Having a remote operating key fob isn't a big deal as long as your key(s) will lock & unlock the doors & hatch manually, so to speak. (Note: See Page 16 of attached file.) Others can chime in if I'm missing something.
It is the other way around (see Pg 12 in attached file). And you only need to turn it either way only once. Lefty Loosey (Unlock All Doors & Hatch); Righty Tighty (Lock All Doors & Hatch),
Had to go back & read this section again. More to the door lock system than I remembered.

Can't wait to get my tools and scanner as I feel there is much more in this car that has been messed with to make it work. *Note: I and the car are located in South Africa -- a right-hand drive country that has some XFs, but not many. Assuredly, parts are scarce locally, but Mercedes is here big time. Also, I have access to all US suppliers so can order what I need from them, ebay, etc. as long as the things are not made only for left-hand drive cars)
Will need to explore why none of the locks work. Am relieved to hear that they should all work in unison and look forward to getting them back to original working condition.

There is an air/vacuum pump under the hatches floor which opens and closes the doors, gas cap access, hatch, etc. There are air lines which run from this pump to the various locks. If the air pump is not working, then the key fob will not operate the lock/unlock function simply because the air pump is not working. Thus do not concern yourself with the key fobs unlock/lock function until you are certain the air pump is working properly. The air pump is also interconnected to the security system. (CLP/SSM). You can use the search term Water in truck in the search box upper right corner of the forum for more information.
This is strange... the switch is connected by cable directly to the BCM which opens and closes the doors.
Not so strange if the BCM is faulty or some thing is disconnected. That is why I asked if the consul buttons worked. His problem may not be with the key at all. I suggest looking into how the PCM system works in relation to door locks. Get the first key working with keyless entry then when you know it is good you can have another key made.BCM not PCM… Using dictation on my phone and it’s difficult to edit.

The console switch is connected to the CLP/SSM via the BCM and it is the pump in the CLP/PCM that operates the doors etc by air pressure in the pneumatic lines to each lock.
The console switch sends two different voltages to the BCM, each voltage is determined by which option is picked, LOCK or UNLOCK. (ala_xire taught me this)
Each voltage is determined by a resistor in the switch.
My console switch does not work and I am slowly working toward a solution or alternatively, I might say to heck with the solution.
My switch works OK, so the BCM is receiving the correct voltages, I tried two switches and the voltages were the same from each.

I know it is a LONG READ but I suggest you (kowaltoboggan) download the owners manual & service manual from this forum & do some research/troubleshooting yourself. Trying to 'shotgun' your problems with multiple symptoms will confuse even the most seasoned troubleshooter UNLESS you take each single item/issue one at a time. The owners manual & service manual can be your best friend in becoming familiar with the correct terminology and steps in fixing each issue your having. One thing I noticed is you mentioned the dealer told you the second key doesn't have the transponder chip, Leave that second key problem until last unless you wish to modify the car security system by using any of the available bypass/repair avenues. Good luck, but start from a basic step-by-step procedure(s)!
Ok ill try to clear this up. The black micro chip is from the original key the electronics that read the buttons pressed are from a mercedes key fob the electronics look identical. My car starts and I can lock and unlock the doors with my key. I just can program my fob to lock and unlock. Electronics from old key fob matches mercedes
What your Mercedes in 1999 SLK or any older model I have no key from someone stealing my car and taking the last key I had unfortunately I never got around to getting that
far
I should have known better this is my second crossfire the 2005 limited the same issues please help,. Yeah my 2004 is doing it or has done it (LOL). Someone please help me how do you just quit making keys for a car who does that it's not like they are a hundred years old ??????!!ta
