Manual Top Operation
Re: Manual Top Operation
. Thank you my tool came yesterday and I was able to lower and raise the top manually. It reset itself and now seems to be working without problems. Everyone thanks so much for this thread and all the help.
Re: Manual Top Operation
I have a question that probably fits this thread best, for completeness.
I was reading the Service Manual about the manual top operation (pages 4043 - 4051, section 23, 482 onwards), and the steps seem to be confused about locking and unlocking the rearbow with the hexwrench.
Manual lowering, step 4 mentions a counterclockwise turn unlocks the bow
Manual raising, step 9 first mentions a counterclockwise turn locks the bow
and then step 14 mentions a clockwise turn locks the bow (additionally?)
So, is the manual confused? Am I confused? Or is this the secret doorknock that provides the true rearbow waterseal lock that the one-click procedure also accomplishes?
(I attached the pertinent part from the 2005 service manual.)

Re: Manual Top Operation
Our owners and service manuals are full of errors and omissions, but they are all we have.
To lock the bow to the lid to put the top up, turn counterclockwise.
To unlock the bow to put the top down, turn clockwise.
My only video to be viewed over 100,000 times. Funny, there are only about 34,000 convertibles in the world.

Yes, thx, I saw the opening post video, I also watched the video by top hydraulics. Question is more for completeness sake. I'll be practicing the procedure soon. I was prepping the required tools. I already have a 10mm wrench selected for the prep-toolbox. (It is a normal wrench, thin by itself, fits perfectly). Need to find a decent hexwrench. I have several, but they are all somewhat rusty and dirty. Don't want that near the car.

You also posted a 2008 service manual excerpt in the other thread, but unfortunately is skipped some pages. It did make me wonder whether they may have changed some of the description.

Yes, thx. As you already mentioned we should watch this three times to really get it. I have now watched it twice, so one more bag of popcorn, and I'm good to go...

Re: Manual Top Operation
I had to read this again and yes that what happens when someone uses a copy/paste procedure. I do try doing a manual operation just to keep my memory fresh and also have a printed copy of the operation and 6mm hex wrench in the car at all times.
I have found one other item that bit me in the behind in the manual.
Cooling Service Info, Sec:7-17, Torq Specs, last two items. WP M6 bolts 10N-m, M8 bolts 35N-m.
WP Install, Sec: 7-64, Step 3, tighten WP bolts to 35N-m.
My feeling was that there was a lot of torq for such a small bolt (the M6 bolts) and two bolts snapped off. I had to rent a trailer and take the XF over to the mechanic to extract them. Lucky he's a good mechanic and had them out in less than 5 minutes. Took him longer to set up than it did to remove the bolts.

Re: Manual Top Operation
SO you understand my cynical attitude about our owners and service manuals. I get a LITTLE pissy when people preach "read the manual", while they are right and there IS a lot of good stuff in there, there are also errors and omissions that, sometimes, are inexcusable.
