Cool Re: buying used, can i certify it?

I believe you can, the original owner can transfer the warranty to the 2nd owner at a cost of $150 - $250 transfer fee, if I am not mistaken. You can purchase a Chrysler Warranty, but will run from the cars in service date not the date of purchase. Use the link below for more info.

If you want the Chrysler warranty, I was told you have to get it from the Chrysler/Dodge dealer who sells the used vehicle to you. They said I can't buy private party and get the warranty from Chrysler. There are a lot of aftermarket companies that will. There are advantages to both.

You have to make sure the aftermarket company is legit and has a good record. If so, they usually let you take it to places other than the dealer.

Check them out.

Not sure if that is totally true...I purchased my Roadster Limited in New York and purchased my extended warranty from a dealer here in Virginia.

Champion Dodge Chrysler is a dealer in Illinois that sells genuine Chrysler extended warranties via online sales:

I'm sure there may be others but I will definitely compare their price to my dealer before buying... as long as it's a genuine Chrysler warranty it shouldn't matter where you buy it.

I have heard of this as well. My source that said "NO" was Chrysler. I called them and they said that to get the Chrysler extended warranty on a used Chrysler it had to go through the dealers certification process as a "Chrysler Certified Pre-Owned vehicle." I am sure warranties are being offered that do not conform to this policy. I would hate to buy one that way only to find that another Chrysler dealer would not honor it.

To be perfectly honest you should not be asking us this question. We can only offer opinions. You should be asking Chrysler yourself.

I bought my XF from a Chrysler dealer and purchased an extended warranty (5 years/50 miles MaxiCare from my purchase date). It did NOT go through the Chrysler Certification program. My understanding is that the dealer pays Chrysler to have a mechanic go over the car and "certify" it. Once that's done, you can still purchase and extended warranty (like the MaxiCare) but it will cost you less because the dealer has already paid to have it certified, which really only covers the powertrain for the 7/8 years and 70/80K miles. You do not have to purchase a certified XF to purchase an extended warranty; you may, however, pay less if it is certified. BTW, I have never had a Chrysler dealer not honor a Chrysler extended warranty and I have 3 Chryslers, each with an extended warranty. They just look up the vin number when you go in for service, give you a free rental if it's going to take more than a day to repair, and either a bill for $0 or $100 deductible when you return.

Exactly.

I should have clarified in my reply - 2 different things we're talking about... there is the certified used warranty that the dealer must perform and there are extended warranties that anyone, 1st owner or not, can buy from Chrysler anytime before 4 yrs 48k miles from in-service date. The link I gave is for the latter.

This is exactly right. The dealer pays Chrysler a 'certification fee", which IIRC is between $400 - $500 to get the 8/80 'certified' power train warranty. Then, if you wish, you can add a 'max care' upgrade for a reduced price (compared to a non-certified car). Coincidentally, the amount of that discount is around $400 bucks! The cost ends up being about the same, but the certified is good for 8/80, whereas the max care max is 7 years.

I bought my Roadster Ltd from a Chrysler dealer, paid the $150 and was granted the BALANCE of both the 3/36 bumper to bumper and the 7/70 powertrain warranties. The 7/70 warranty is assumable for 1st and 2nd owners only. (Documented Pedigree).
The 3/36 is assumable up to the 3rd owner.
If you can provide the VIN to a dealer they can run a check for status.
This is a link to the Chrysler .pdf warranty book.

Best of luck!

As an aside, I actually phoned Chrysler and spoke to a customer service rep. who told me about the 3/36 b to b warranty. My dealer was unaware of this, thinking that he had to honor the powertrain warranty only.

And to help clarify some more or add to the confusion I think that the mileage has a lot to do with which warranty you are able to purchase. I wanted a 7/70 MaxiCare warranty but (I think) because I was over 36,000 miles I was only able to get the "used car" 5/50 Maxicare warranty. Again, that was from the date I purchased the car not the in service date so I think it worked out very well - my warranty actually covers me to 94,000 miles! I believe that the previous post regarding it has to have less than 45,000 miles to get any warranty, from Chrysler at least, is correct.

I wanted to see if I could get an update on the warranty topic.
I just purchased a 2006 blaze red base roadster with the SE package and ASP tires. It had 380 miles and was considered a used car since it had been previously titled. I've had the car for two days and love it. The price was great, the trade in $ (Mini Cooper S) very fair and the dealer has been terrific to work with (Pete's Chrysler in Gt Barrington MA).

The car has the rest of the 3/36 (in svc date 8/07). Based on what i've read on the forum purchasing an extended Chrysler warranty makes a lot of sense. So, finally, a question...

Anyone have any opinion on buying the contract from other than the selling/servicing dealer? I can save a few bucks but I don't know if I will be shooting myself in the foot to save a little.

Q2 Is there anything other than the standard contract that can/should be included to fit Xfire specifically?

Sorry to ramble, first time posting and I wanted to get info out there for all of you that have already gone through what I'm looking at.

I just re-read the Warranty booklet and it states:
1st Owner & 2nd Owner with Paid Powertrain Transfer
There is nothing said about where you got it.
It also says:
Who Is Covered?
You are covered by the Basic Limited Warranty if
you are a purchaser for use of the vehicle.
I think it would be worth a phone call to Chrysler.

Read This:
it's the story of my transfer
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ad.php?t=18139

The number:

Contact Us by Telephone
1-800-992-1997
M-F 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Continental Time Zones

Ask about how the transfer works. You should be able to pay it as long as it's within 30 days of purchase.

Bill,

Go here - call Mike -
http://www.chryslerservicecontracts.com

He is very knowledgeable in the warranty lingo, he knows Chrysler rules, and he can tell you what your car currently has and what is available to you. Best of all, he will be up to HALF the price that your dealer will charge you for the SAME chrysler ESP (extended service plan).

Chrysler sells service contracts to ANY Chrysler owner. They can not pinpoint you down to one specific Chrysler dealer. People move, Dealers close, etc - how could they hold you down to one specific dealer? They can't. What if you move 1,500 miles away from where you purchased your car? Are you then required to drive all the way back to get it fixed? What about someone on vacation, and a problem arises? You get my point - they can't pinpoint you to a dealer - it is a CHRYSLER service contract, NOT a 'john does Chrysler dealer contract' - so any Chrysler service center has to warranty it (if it is covered, of course).

The reason to buy from ANOTHER dealer/online source as opposed to your local dealer is cost. My dealer tried to charge me $2,995 for a warranty that only cost $1,100 online. Why would I pay that? There's absolutely no reason to...regardless of what your dealer says, it is simply price gouging.

Your local dealer will try to tell you that the online contract is not a 'Genuine' Chrysler contract, but they are full of it and trying to make a buck. The website is run by a service department AT a Chrysler Dealer - they just sell them cheap because they sell more of them and have less 'overhead' to do so.

Hope this helps.
And congrats on your purchase!
Shawn

Congrats & Welcome to the Forum!!!

To answer question 1, you can save buy shopping different dealerships for your extended warranty. Be prepared to fork over about $200 for an extended warranty evaluation, this consists of an oil change whether you need it or not and an overall evaluation of your car.

Question 2, you should (IMHO) go for the MaxCare Bumper to Bumper 7/70 warranty (plan code MC77ON), but be aware the warranty will run concurrently with your existing warranty and the existing "in service" date. I think of it as an upgrade to extend the existing 3/36 warranty rather than an extended warranty.

I actually saved about $500 (not including the $193 evaluation fee) by getting the warranty from the Dealer that services my car, rather than the dealer where I purchased the car. Just like anything else, a dealer will try to mark up the warranty.

The Certified 8/80 warranty can only be offered by a 5 Star Chrysler Dealer (who must sell you the used car). The dealer must do this

http://www.chryslerbrandcertified.co...rranty_US&st=1

to offer the certified warranty to you.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It sounds like the maxcare is the way to go and deal away to get the best price. Thanks.
