what he said^^^ Actually it is a bit worse.....a $hitty Prius might be able to pass you when the IC pump goes out. Easy fix, don't let the Dealership mess up your car of keep it for eternity (thereby increasing the likely hood of them denting or scratching it). Just buy an aftermarket pump and change it. It is very easy to do. There are some great "How To" articles on here posted up by members.
Good luck.

No, there are no small signs. It just happens (based on experience x2).

ok well with mine if i press the gas at about 20 percent or less in going into third and fourth gear the supercharger losses power( like if u are running out of gas) kinda like it hesitates to shift for only a second and the car jerks a little bit ( so small you would not tell if you were not looking for it) but then if fine after a second or 2. but if i do about 50 percent power there is no problems. any ideas??

Default Johnson Intercooler Pump!

Johnson CM30 or Johnson CM90

I saw EC has the CM30 but I read on the SLK forum that some people are using the CM90.

Has there been any consensus which delivers more reliable/ better performance?

It is my understanding that the CM90 flows too much/too fast for our application (possible cavitation?). The CM30 is the proven way to go; or replace with a stock O.E.M. Bosch. My humble $.02

I replaced my stock pump at around 30,000 with a Johnson and now at 48,000 it's going out. Should I be looking for some other issue that would cause it to fail so soon?
Much appreciated

there have been reports of some members on mbworld with cm30 failures. no definite reason as to why the pumps failed (maybe a bad batch?) it would appear either the newer bosch pump or the cm30 will perform the same and its still way cheaper to diy the project than let a dealer fix it

Did you flush your coolant system real good and change the fluid when you changed out pump, and use distilled water in the mix? Not saying this is the problem, but crud in the IC system can slow the flow and force the pump to work harder. My $.02

Haha, as the owner of both a Prius (my daily driver) and a SLK32 AMG that had my ic pump go out last summer, I can tell you from real experience that YES - A PRIUS WILL BE ABLE TO PASS YOU if your ic pump goes out, especially at highway speeds.

For those who are still wondering, here is the process by which you lose power from a faulty IC pump in the SRT6/SLK32:

1. The OE pump seizes up for whatever reason, age, bad design, etc, and fails to circulate coolant through the intercooler

2. As a result, intake air temperatures (IATs) gets hotter and hotter as you drive because it is no longer getting cooled by the intercooler

3. The hot IATs eventually triggers a fault code in the sensor that says it is over temp.

4. The computer shuts down fuel delivery to the engine to protect it from overheating and save the supercharger.

5. Sometimes, after driving "normally" for a few minutes, the temps go back down and power returns. Rinse, repeat.

So as you can see, its difficult to reproduce every time as it depends a lot on weather, how hard you drive it, how long the car has been running, how long its been idling, etc. All are factors that build up the IATs.

I was tearing out my hair trying to figure this out when I first bought my 32, and accidentally replaced my aux. water pump with a CM30, thinking it was the IC pump lol... Well now I have a CM30 for both IC and Aux. Water pumps in my SLK. A bit of overkill for the former but hey - live and learn!

From APEUSA, they have two different sizes for the hose connections. They are 16 and 20mm.

Which size has fit best for people?

Thanks.!

The 20mm (3/4") size is the one I bought and the fit on the hoses was perfect.

I would think there in lies how it is part of the "powertrain". I understand that is not attached to the actual engine or whatnot, but still. I think this is ridiculous also because I have been in communication, on my part actually, to Chrysler's complaint number since last Monday, the 19th. They just told me officially today(30th), from that department, that it is mandatory that I get a diagnostic test to know for sure that is the problem. I am pretty sure it is, since I insisted the SRT mechanic come out and check on it persoanlly and confirmed that is what it was.

Bottom line: It has been almost two weeks for them to make a decision to cover it or not, which after if I were to get the diagnostic test it would be a "slim" chance it would be covered. Crazy! Spend the $100 on it for giggles then?
So how about this being sole transportation? Not driving it, but still paying on it. A car that is broke cause of a personnel/logistics issue within Chrysler, that I, as the consumer is supposed to understand after buying the extended service contract. The service part here seems to be lacking, by far.

Two questions-

Am I really that far off here? Buying the contract, but yet this component not be covered, and will probably cost me out of pocket in the range of $500...

And..

How many people have had to change their intercooler pump so far? Please also state the mileage when it failed as well.

There seems to be a lot of people that have changed it so far, but yet not enough for a recall I suppose.

Regards,
First don't blame the dealership, blame Chrysler. I own 2 SRT6's and work in the service dept of a chrysler dealer and their hands are tied MY IC pump both went out at 22k and 37k respectively but no one cares on discontinued cars! Upgrade to the johnson cm30 pump. It will last longer and pumps 50% more It's what everyone uses to replace. I found the cheapest one at HPAutoworks! $165. Johnson CM30 Intercooler Pump

Use hose clamps and you won't even lose any fluid or just let the dealer do it. I replaced mine in one hour but I had the right tools and a lift
