Les, I think it's due more to having a true "posi" rear end. Actually, a SRT on street tires (with a Wavetrac) at the drags should be "fish tailing" like crazy.
But I agree, the short wb sure helps.

I'm not much of a drag racer but I plan on getting better at it. I'm fine drifting a bit in a corner but going straight "sideways" takes getting used to.

I'm working on a little something relating to our conversation and I'll fill you in if it works.

Les

when two tires are spinning together, it is going to walk sideways... That is why you need traction, to move you forward and control the sideways walk. I think you guys just need more time...everything I ever had was posi trac....my cars are finally normal again... but it you want to race with one slick doing the work, so be it, but I will stay with the two...once you figure it out, you will launch forward, grabbing gears, rather than the steering wheel...traction is your problem now...which is a very good problem to have...hope to take the cars up north for a test and tune next weekend if the weather holds...
Right out of high school, I worked part time at Norm Paddock's shop. Norm raced a gasser, Opel GT... 600hp in those days, which eventually led to the pro stock class. Imagine a tubbed Opel GT, big slicks in the back, bicylce tires on the front. Wheel base has nothing to do with it. Norm would pull the front wheels and lurch forward...traction is where it at...if he broke loose, he would have to shut here down... When racing those early pro stock classes, he was racing pintos, vegas, etc...all shorter wheel bases than ours and twice the HP...Norm was building Pro Star Chassis then for the pro stock series. The guy that did my head work on my Camaro back then, was a guy name Glidden...ever heard of him....lol

SIdeways is not a large factor if the tires are inflated the same.............within .5 pounds for sure. Also the alignment of the rear tires to be sure that they are pointing in the same correct direction. Swapping the rear can require a 4 wheel alignment.

After that the road surface affects the sideways approach due to crown or slope in the grade. Enjoy, Woody

Racers often connect both rears together with a hose to balance the pressures using a wyye hose to allow correct adjustment.......Weeee

Well, after sitting on my wave tray for a few months, I had it installed today.. Wahoo, I now have a "normal" car like I drove years ago. I do have to admit though, the first time I hammered it with traction control off I got clear sideways .. I sure like these things

Buy the way, my partner was coming south from west Yellowstone and said a very fast xf passed him... I am sure it was the black color that made it look fast :-)

Alright, since this whole Wavetrac thing began way back when, many things have happened including another addition to our family back in June, right around when my Wavetrac was delivered. Needless to say, I have been busy with our bundle of joy for the past few months and have not had a lot of free time to work on the Xfire. However, that is changing in early February when I plan on pulling the diff and shipping it to Devin. The Wavetrac has been very successfully used as a paperweight during this time.

To help bring a lot of the information in this thread onto one post I have included a summation of forum posts and pointers below.

- The Devin install will include the seals for $225. The bearings for most Mercedes are still good(99.9% - if not, they cost around $400). I pay the shipping to send it to Devin(approx. $80 both ways). Drain oil before shipping.

- Torque settings
o Rear diff bolts – 84 ft/lbs
o Front diff bolt – 33 ft/lbs
o All suspension bolts – 52 ft/lbs
o Driveshaft bolts – 44 ft/lbs

- jonnyb provided instructions that will require a wheel alignment – thread named “SRT6 Rear End Removal – Short Cuts?” posted 05.08.11. (I am not as smart as some of you where I could include a link to this thread!)

- Robs, Woodys, and Docs way do not require a wheel alignment – not sure where their instructions were posted, but I could have missed it with this long thread.

- Watch for all of the washers and spacers on the front diff bolt when removing.

- Put car in neutral to get the 3rd driveshaft bolt out.

- If you install the front diff rubber spacers upside down they will collapse and allow the diff to move up and down by ½”.

- Do not lower diff onto your chest as this could cause physical injury (broken/cracked ribs!)

- Rob with Needswings has the proper diff oil needed for this job – Motul 300.

- How much fluid goes in the diff? – fill it until it is full.

I tried to cover as many highlights as I could. Please let me know if I missed anything and I will let you know how it goes. Later and Happy New Year!

I am telling you now that I have them both done, and got to drive them, especially the roadster with the summer compound tires...they are twice as fun to drive as they were before....truely made a huge difference...If you can afford it, I would now tell everyone this would be my first mod over CAI's, Pulley's or Tune's....seriously...

dementors you missed 1 important step. the torque on all the suspension parts should be done with the car on the ground. how do you do that you ask? tighten everything up and drive to a muffler shop or alignment shop and put the car on the rack. loosen and retorque or use a pit.
also theres a specific amount of diff oil that goes in the car. its in the service manual.

Guys, need your two cents on shipping. I was quoted the following to ship both the rear end and the Wavetrac from Louisiana to Devin.

Fedex is 234 with declared value of 3000 and ups was 270 with declared value of 3000 no insurance was available so if it is lost or stolen I am out of luck. This is one way!!!

Thoughts? This seems very high and the no insurance issue concerns me. Thx

- I used UPS ground from Georgia and it was $75.
- You can also use USPS, but beware that they have a 75 lb limit, so you might have to ship the actual wavetrac in a seperate box.
- I also put the diff in a trash bag and used expanding foam to make a shipping cocoon for it.

OK fellas, I think I'm about to join the fun. I called Devin yesterday and was told he still has some. Also, apparently Vivid Racing has them as well, and they are a dealer of mine (bought about $80K worth in 2011) so I may be able to get a little discount.
So my question is how much $$ am I looking at for the whole process? Parts, Labor, Shipping...Everything. As much as I like to consider myself car literate and have most of the necessary tools, I think this is sometning I'll delegate to an expert. That is unless anyone is willing to help me out... I'll bring pizza!! Thanks for your help.
PS: This year may bring some good gains, My part time job will pay only for fun things this year. NW manis, Eurcharged TCU tune, maybe even the Eurocharged torque converter. All followed by an updated ECU Tune.

Amx – I was in the initial group so I went through Devin, no need to go through Rob, which I would have done otherwise.
Maybe it costs so much because I am declaring a value of $3000. I will check that tomorrow. I will be doing this Saturday and plan on shipping it out Monday morning if I can get a decent shipping rate. Thanks for the feedback.

32krazy, you were right! Devin did the work quickly and shipped it out the same day. It just showed up at my house on Friday, just in time for me to leave for a conference! Oh well, it looks like the install will happen this Saturday.
