Common SRT Belt Throwing Problems
A good friend owns an SRT and the acc belt doesn't want to run true. It shreaded a belt once before and tore the water pump pulley off.
The last time he had it running, the belt jumped one of the grooves, and it started to shread.
He said the last time he drove it, it felt as though the belt was slipping, at least that's the only way he could describe it.
He said he's running a 185 pulley. Does it have a history of causing this to happen?
Could the belt tensioner be the problem?
I don't think he's leaking oil from the oil filter O-Ring.
If it was the belt tensioner pulley going bad, I would think he would hear that.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks guys, I've never had the problem so I wasn't sure what to tell him. That, and I don't have an SRT.
Is this the best suggestion?

crank pulley or tensioner. he needs to shoot a video of the crank pulley at idle and at 3000 rpm. that will tell the tale
i have run 2 oem crank pulleys and a 178. modded belt wrap kit, needswings pulley saver kit. the only time i ever tossed a belt was when i pushed some anti freeze out the overflow and it sprayed the belt.

Did he install the larger water pump pulley with the 185? He could install a 100mm pulley in place of the tensioner pulley (if it fits) to snug the belt some more. Hopefully the crank pulley isn't wobbling.

Well, just add to what you said earlier, look for any liquids. If he has been running that pulley for awhile and this just started, then liquids or bearing wobble, or tensioner, or.......lol. Never ending working on modified cars.
The same has happened when the OEM pulley started to disintegrate. The rubber shock absorber started to fail and the crank pulley moved forward relative to the crankshaft.
Because of the misalignment the belt jumps a groove backward and hits the raised rib at the back of the pulley which cuts the rear rib off. These belts are strong and rigid sideways and do not take kindly to be out of alignment not like the old 'V' belts. The misalignment is also obvious on the smooth pulleys.
I erased a lot of my posts as people said they were to wordy, I was going to rewrite them but never bothered. I said f*** it and left them to figure it out.
Probably something similar. Some of those pulleys had the grooves machined to far forward relative to the location face on the crankshaft. Tighed1 had some material machined of the back face of the pulley and it corrected the problem. Some of the photos showed the problem but it was ignored by many as the length of the pulley looked OK.

Dont guess, get an eyeball on the belts and see if they are in alignment. Could be pulley related and yes wobble can be an issue, should be zero up to about 1/16 th " on the high side. Pulleys can be wrong, see my 181 pulley photo for reference of this. Woody Enjoy

That was one of the first series, wrong length...........

RMADERMANs picture shows the problem of the 181 pulleys back in the day.
Who ever made them made an error.
If the drawing was wrong the designer had no clue what he was doing.
Sometimes people see a buck to be made and jump in with both feet without thinking.
180, please note that the length of the snout is different from the stock pulley, i.e. too long. This caused the pulley to be out of alignment with the other belt pulleys and thus jump. I used the level to align the faces and grooves of the pulleys, the snout was off by about 0.200inch as shown by the rule on the top. I have been there and done that, sadly. Woody Enjoy

RMADERMANs picture shows the inner ends lined up and you can see the error in mismatch.
I know that the snout as you call it is too long but your picture only shows that the overall length is longer. The overall length could be longer but the distance from the rear of the pulley to the ribs has to be correct.
LOL
We like accurate figures, no point in leaving errors uncorrected as some one may rely on the answer as gospel in the future.
