Default Headlight Restoration - something that actually works

I tried this product a while back for my driver side headlight to get rid of that "eaten-away" look that happens on the upper portion of our headlights due to UV exposure. Well my passenger side light was getting rotted away more severely than the driver, so I needed to do something. I mean I tried everything, 3M Cleaner/Polish, Meguiar's PlasticX, and some other Headlight restore stuff that's blue. I've High-grit sanded with all the products and nothing ever cleaned them.

So naturally I went back to this product that's made by Crystal View Chemicals and did both headlights. This time around I wasn't going to mess around and let me tell you both headlights look practically brand new. The passenger side (worse of the two) still has some nicks but the bad spots are completely gone and driver side is crystal clear with no imperfections noticeable.

I was skeptical at first cause it looks like a product you would get off an infomercial and I'm sure this product has been on an infomercial but it works.

Now if you catch the rotting away early you can probably use the products I tried before but if not this will do the trick. I got mine at a Advance Auto Parts for $20. I also recommend getting some masking tape and mask off the area around the headlight because the "clear coating" process does not like paint and you need to wipe it on, plus it's easy cleanup once you're done.

I wish I had before an after shots but I just got a camera charger today and I did it over the weekend. I'll take pics a little later and you can see where the imperfections were on the passenger side cause I didn't get everything sanded down as good as I thought but it's 10x better than what it looked like before. As far as longevity, who knows but $20 is better than a couple hundred on new headlights that might do the same as the old ones.

www.myheadlight.com for more info or to order if you can't find it at a AAP.

In the past month, my headlights have deteriorated badly. They used to be pretty much perfect and all of a sudden they have developed areas just under the horizontal crease line that look like I took a buffer and held it on too long. These areas feel rough to the touch, far from smooth. And the passenger side is much worse than the drivers side. I tried Plasti-X with no improvement whatsoever.

Now here's my question... isn't this a warranty issue as opposed to a home repair? I intend to take it to the dealer soon, but due to work, not for another week or so. Should I expect a fight?

That's exactly how my passenger side headlight was..rough to the touch along the whole top and a big circular area where the low beam is. The driver side wasn't as bad

The warranty I believe is for condensation "inside" the housing. I'm sure if you're car is still under warranty you can try to get new headlights since it's a manufacturers flaw but I don't have a warranty anymore.

So this is pretty much a last resort for those of us with no warranty.

Here's what they look like now (pretty much cleared them up)

I spoke to my dealer last week about the headlights, he said it is not a warranty issue, but they do a kit for $85 blah blah blah...
Obviously happening a lot nowadays with plastic lights, and it's not a manufacturing flaw.

Would it be an idea to apply 3m protective film now to the area affected??
Where exactly is the area anyway??

Mine were very bad and foggy looking when I bought my car about two months ago. I used the blue stuff with the strong ammonia smell. They now look perfect in day light but at night you can see the sand like pitting when the lights are on. What is the best way to make them look good at night?

Get the kit and sand the crap out of them with the stuff they give you. Trust me, I've tried everything and this is the only thing that has worked. The key to get them perfect is to do it in the garage, taped off and apply the CV #2 evenly, it's remarkable the transformation from the cloudy white look after the 2-stage sanding to crystal clear.

My affected areas were along the top down to the middle on both sides and on the passenger side, I had a circular spot right next to the Low-Beam projector.

I really wish I had done it when I got the camera charger to show the difference.

Well, I just got home from a visit to the local Chrysler dealership.

The service girl took a look at my headlights, checked to see if my car was still in warranty (2 years, 16K miles), and ordered new headlights without the slightest bit of hesitation. Just to be safe, I asked if this was covered and she said it was indeed. She even reminded me that I will be entitled to a rental while they do the work.

Very relieved.

I believe that this whole headlight issue is just another one of those things that we've inherited from MB. In the Washington DC area it seems that about every fourth car is a MB. I see a lot, and I mean a LOT of pretty new MB's and their headlights look foggy or hazy. It took my old Subaru 10 years to get that bad but it seems it takes an MB about 3 years.

I know, both of our old Hondas a 1994 and a 1998 never got like this. I don't think I've ever seen a headlight get so pitted or deteriorated so soon on any make or model. My mom's CTS is the same year as my Xfire and her headlights look brand new.
