Has anybody successfully REPAIRED a cupholder?
I realize that this is probably thread #57 concerning the cupholder, but here it goes:
I removed the cupholder from the console yesterday, and am awaiting the arrival of my new storage bin. I won't miss the cupholder, but I thought that it might be nice to try to repair it and save it for the next owner, or maybe fix it and sell it on eBay to recover the cost of the bin.
The cupholder worked fine for about the first week that I owned the car, until a business card slipped down inside and made it impossible to close. When I removed it yesterday, I was able to get the business card out easily, but discovered that I still could not close the cupholder normally. It will close if I depress the latch that is located at the front of the cupholder, and it opens normally by pressing on the front edge of the cover.
There must be some kind of mechanism inside the box that unlocks the open cupholder, allowing it to close. It is apparently connected to the latch at the front. Does anyone know why my cupholder won't close, but will open normally? Have you managed to repair a cupholder that had the same problem?

The cup holders in both CF's I have had would close easier if the latch at the top was pinched in. Forcing the cup holder to close without the pinching surely damages the locking mechanism that holds it open and locked.I cannot see you have a problem.
I ordered the standard storage bin from my local Chrysler dealer, part number1BQ12XDVAA. It is supposed to arrive on Monday, but I am not counting on it. They are charging $57 plus tax for the part. I called five or six junkyards on Friday, trying to find a used one for less, but was unsuccessful. The lowest price that I found for a new one on the internet was $50.34 plus shipping, so I jumped on the $57 quote from the dealer.

What "latch at the top?" When I got the car, the cupholder closed easily by grasping it at the front and rear and squeezing gently. This apparently released the latching mechanism. It no longer works, so I DO HAVE A PROBLEM.

Give up now!
Good you did. The suggested retail for that part was something like $82 in 2009. The parts guy at Hayes Chrysler saw that and said "I don't have the GUTS to charge that, since you special ordered it, {punches keys on calculator} how's $55?"
Yea, you have a problem - you are arguing with onehundred80, no one wins a debate with him! He's like an "Intellectual Ninja Canadian".

It closes and stays closed from what I read, I just can't see his problem. The latch is the very thing he says he pinches, front and back. It will shut without the pinch by pulling it back and then pushing it forward. Just pushing it forward makes it click slightly, my first did and my current car still does.
The first sprang up to easily, a real pain on a manual tranny car and my latest is reluctant to spring up at all and this suits me just fine.
Let's let him continue arguing with himself... i'm going to come back in a few days to see how many posts he has in this thread.
You are getting waaay tooo old to get upset. What did you expect. We both have "working" cup holders, so Pizza doesn't even trust us.... How do they break those things anyway? Mine don't break, because NO DRINKS are allowed in my cars, acceleration causes spillage! LOL...move on to the next problem Dave...Mark doesn't trust us anymore.....
I'm with you Doc, never used either cup holder. My son went to use it coming back from Florida with the car. I told him "no way José", he was lucky I let him in the car with the drink.
The cup holder gets changed out when I do the paddles install anyway.

) and seem to lack any skills, many roll overs etc are caused by them. They get the jobs by undercutting the price of others. They drive like maniacs, we feel your pain.
I worked at the Windsor Husky for 4 years and I can tell you.. Those new truckers do not have their license. When processing their T-Check, I don't know how many FTI, Buffalo Group, and I Wheels drivers gave me a G2 dated for that year. (G2 is the graduated beginners here in Ontario. You need an AZ license to drive transport). The sad part, after reporting them to the MTO a few times I was finally told "Stop doing our job. We'll catch them eventually." Nothing like watching a beginner tie his hood back on to the truck with clothes line rope and drive off in a snow storm.
Anyways.
I snapped the little clip off. Afterwards I took the spring out. And at the back of the cup holder unit, while it was disassembled, I stuffed a piece of hard, flexible plastic in, bent at a 65* angle to keep the cup holder flush with the console when it's closed. That was my incredible fix.
While playing with the thing (I thought I broke it worse than I did) I learned that if you pull the silver area of the cup holder back (towards the trunk) it will close with no force (That's minus the spring though) No need to pinch it or force it back further than it moves.
Oh, and wear goggles if you take the spring out. I did but I still almost lost an eye in the process.

Not necessarily 'repaired', but I did make mine so it doesnt pitch a tent all day long. I removed the spring so now to open it I just push down on the rear. It pops up and locks into place in the up position. To put it back down I just squeeze the upper portion from the front and back and the latch releases so it just glides back down on its own. Works for me and was free.
I can see how this argument started, the OP used the word 'latch', and I would use the word 'catch'. The catch is connected to the silver plate, or latch to me, by a bar. Confusion caused by the perceived meaning of a simple word.
The silver plate on top of the cup holder is a lever, you can see the pivot pin in the side of it. When the CH is open and you push against the silver plate it forces the catch to lock even tighter, but if you pinch the top of the silver plate toward the black part of the holder behind it, the catch is retracted and the CH swings down easily. Quite clever really.
There is another catch than holds the CH down, this is hard to see as it is something to do with an arm that is on the front vertical face of the CH. If the CH does not stay down this is where the problem lies.
I apologize to the OP if I upset him by not seeing his problem but I am a little p!ssed that he jumped on me when I was the only one who attempted to help him, it will not happen again. Pizzaguys comments, or maybe that should be Racerguy
, only added fuel to the fire.
