Default Fuel Filters

Has anyone used the Purolator Fuel Filter Part #F65416 as a replacement?
Its at Pep Boys. I can Walk there in 5 min and its $39.99.
But is it any good or actually a correct replacement part?

You want a BOSCH filter/regulator part number 002 477 30 01

Go to Needswings.com or Autohausaz and get the RIGHT part.

I'd suggest Needswings.com because Rob won't sell you the wrong item and he knows the car very well.

Thank You so much. I would rather throw the right money after a problem than throw money twice. What's wrong with the Purolator product?
(Which I see also fits Volvos and Escorts) No regulator? Wrong regulator? or just wrong product?

The part number you reference is a Mercedes part number.
Ask for that part and you may end up paying Mercedes prices.
Do not ask for the Chrysler part number either or you may end up paying the Mercedes price plus a Chrysler mark up.

OK. I just spent Almost $60.00 to have the Bosch part mailed to me from needswings.com. What do you know about the $40.00 Purolator part I could have picked up tonight and installed tomorrow?"

Frankly I would not put a non name brand filter in the car. If the Purolator one is made in China I would not take it for free. I'd be happy with the one you are getting.

OneHundred80, your response was awesome. Back in the 'day,' 1968, when I was buying fuel filters for my 1966 Triumph, I would always buy the Bosch $6.00 part rather than the US $4.00 equivalent. This was an emotional choice rather than a financial choice. Now that I am retired, I always want to evaluate every dollar I spend. Saving $20.00 today could in ten years buy me 30 min of 2024 street parking in Chicago when visit my daughter. (Saving me a 2024 parking fine of $350.00) The US and China Can make awesome parts (or Crap).

Purolator is an old US company. Getting their parts from China? Maybe. I still want to know if anyone has experience with the Purolator part. Emotionally, Bosch Best. Realistically, Retired, Fixed income; was the extra money worth it?

That right there is why I refer to Rob at Needswings - you do the job once and don't worry about it.

Thank you both; Pizzaguy and Onehindred80. I am comfortable with my Bosch decision. Realistically, I know we are talking Crossfire parts. $60.00 or $40.00, Who the heck cares. The convienience of pick it up today would have been nice. But I want the right part, every time. This begs the larger question of Chrysler(MB) Parts, OEM parts, or after market parts. For example I just bought after market rotors (up the street) for my car at just under $41.00 each; as compared to Chryslers $300.00 or OEM $150.00. For gosh sakes, they are just machined, forged metal. The first time you put your foot on the brakes, any rotors you buy are out of spec as far as Chrysler(MB) is concerned. If anyone can convince me otherwise, I think $165.00 as compared to $1200.00 was a good decision. Realistically, I'll never be stopping my car from speeds over 80MPH; so tire costs, too. $95.00 each as compared to $375 each; (I'm never going to be accelerating or cornering at 159 MPH.) There are wise $ choices as compared to wasteful $ choices. I love my Crossfire, and never want to short change it; but I now have a fixed income, and I don't want to waste money when I do not have to. Thanks for any suggestions.

The fuel filter is a pressure regulator as well, it has to be right. But when it comes to brake pads or light bulbs or a battery - I'm more inclined to buy what is local (altho I special ordered my brake pads because of the good things I heard about Hawk pads).

Be careful with electrical parts - if it doesn't say BOSCH, dont buy it. That means you won't be buying crank position sensors or other sensors at Autozone. And BOSCH does not always mean expensive, my CPS was $47 shipped from germanautosupply.com Autozone wanted $80 for a china-made generic part, and the dealer - well, forget the dealer, it woudl be a Bosh part but I've heard of people paying well over $100 for a CPS from a dealer.

$60 for a fuel filter with a built-in fuel pressure regulator is not a bad deal.

I used to buy a lot of Purolator parts. I still do buy some. When I was first conducting long-interval oil change tests on our daily drivers (from 5k miles to as much as 12k miles) I had disappointing performance from a Purolator oil filter. Like most aftermarket oil filters, they do not have the pleats supported by the adhered rope like the Mann/Mercedes Benz filters do. When removed after 11k miles, I found the pleats in the Purolator filter had completely lost their shape. Some of the pleats were smashed together blocking oil flow, and some were stretched out flat, at risk to even tear.

After a 12k mile oil change, the Mann/Mercedes filter looked like new, only dirtier. That is all I have used since.

Ive had some experience with aftermarket fuel filters. My advice is to buy a Factory filter. I decided to change mine out a few years ago, and went with an Auto Zone brand, thinking it was just a fuel filter. Not realizing it was also a pressure regulator. After having it in for about two weeks, the car started to start very hard. It also did not have full power under a load. I could not figure out what it was, and thru the forum, realized the filter was also a regulator. I took a pressure test at the fuel rail, and discovered the problem was in fact the fuel filter I had just replaced. I had Auto Zone replace it, and it was fine for a few weeks again. Then it repeated what it had done the first time. The manufacturing process must not be the greatest on these, and found out aluminum shavings were in fact getting stuck in the pressure relief valve, and the filter would not hold pressure. I then Bought a Mann filter, and it also did the same thing. I ended up getting a used one from a Crossfire, and have had no problems since. How crazy is that. Hope this helps someone, as it had me scratching my head for some time, until It was finally figured out

You should be able to pickup an OE Bosch fuel filter at any good parts store. A store with an import focus, as opposed to a big chain, might be a better bet. The OE filter is undoubtedly a Bosch product, car manufacturers don't make filters, Mercedes included. You could buy the exact same Bosch filter at an MB or Chrysler dealer, you'll just pay more. I can't imagine why anyone anyone would think the fuel pressure regulator comes with the filter, no way.

You should work on your imagination.
From the OEM Service Manual.

'The fuel pressure regulator and main fuel filter are combined into a single unit. A strainer inside the fuel tank also provides a means of preliminary filtering of the fuel before it leaves the bottom of the fuel tank.'

That does seem to be the case, unlike most FI systems, and by most I mean 90%. The pressure regulators I've seen are always separate and sometimes expensive, a part that would be unusual to replace in less than 100k miles if ever . I've never had to replace a pressure regulator on any Ford, Toyota, Audi, or any other car I've owned. It's more like a glorified anti-drain back system but I guess it works, and it's cheap. Not a lot of imagination needed for the engineer who came up with that system (in the early 90s), who seems to have to told to design "some thing cheap that we already use". Why replace a part that is still fully functional?

If using Rob's adjustable fuel pressure regulator it seems the Mercedes part number is 0024772701 which can be had for under $15. shipped as this filter has no regulator in it. I believe the Mann part number is a WK 831, used mostly on the 5.4/5.5 supercharged Mercedes V8's. I like Rob and his service parts but like some others am on a fixed income and saving $30. can be put towards Rob's adjustable regulator. I took a chance and bought an SL55 fuel pump for $80. shipped off ebay, supposedly from a car with 49k miles on it. My car is a Mercedes SLK32 AMG and the cost of repairs is quite high if the dealer is involved. They get $900. for the IC pump when Rob sold it to me for a bit over $100.
I would like to confirm the fuel filter if anyone has used one with the adjustable regulator from Rob but not his $45. filter. Anyone?
