Default Low coolant light

Hi everyone,

Since I've owned the car, the coolant light likes to come on and off. The service manual says that it is a low coolant light. Temp is still showing good, right in the middle. When I look at the coolant tank, that's where I get confused. Am I totally blind because I can't see a low and max line on the tank itself. I don't even know if my coolant level is fine. It seems low in one part of the tank.

Then I looked at the coolant flush tutorial to get to know which coolant was recommended. You guys seemed to recommend G05 which is not carried by any auto/department store around here. Why G05? what does it even mean? I would like to know. All I could see is HOAT rated coolant (which was recommanded in the other thread as well), 50/50. It was recommended to use 3/4 of anti-freeze concentrate with 1/4 of distilled water? Can any of you guys elucidate me on that.

Thanks

The coolant level in the tank should be level with the white plastic post inside the tank
There are no lines on the tank indicating low and high

The ratio is 50/50, antifreeze/distilled water. Most use Zerex G-05 it is a HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology). I cannot remember where I got mine though. You are best to use distilled water, it is cheap enough at the grocery store.
The light flickering is not only caused by low coolant, put ‘coolant light’ in search and see what Pizzaman says about it among others.

I found the G05 HOAT coolant. I will take picture of what we can see of the tank to show you guys the level. It's probably low.

The manual is wrong. Ok, let's call it "misleading".
The light indicates that something is wrong:
  1. The coolant level in the reserve tank is low.
  2. The coolant level sensor in the reserve tank is defective.
  3. The engine temperature is above 2xx degrees (not sure what temp, I believe above 220F)
  4. The Fan Control Module is indicating that the current flowing thru the engine cooling fan is either lower than expected or higher than expected.
  5. The Fan Control Module is not communicating at all with the ECM.
And probably other stuff I don't know about.

From what you describe, I'd suspect the most likely issue with your car is (in descending order of likelihood) 2, 1 or 4.

Does not look low to me. (Show us the level from the OUTSIDE view.)

With a cold engine, the tank must not be very full, because as the engine heats up, coolant expands and the tank level will rise considerably.

That is low, the coolant when cool should be level with the top of the white post visible through the fill hole as mentioned by Valk. Which makes it level with the top of the white tank section.

I was able to put around 1.8 L until it reached the top of the post. No coolant light yet. I've filled it a bit more after that because I didn't have anywhere to get rid of what I had left (2L in total). Hopefully that's fine. I will report back if the light comes back on. If it doesn't I won't. I will make sure I don't see any leaks as well.

Check for any leaks where the return hose attaches to the reservoir. A common issue with the reservoir tank is that the return hose nipple tends to break or crack over time and leads to coolant leaks. Some guy here has a nice detailed write up on how to repair a broken coolant tank nipple.

When you put too much in it will blow out when it gets hot. You need some air in the tank to take up the expansion, water does not compress but air does hence the need for it. So you may see some under the car at some time.

Have you solved your problem? Presumably you did from your previous post.

I did the tensioner, both pulleys and belt service and now my battery is dead. I'm trying to charge it with a low cost 2amp battery maintenance charger (it takes forever and it's quite cold here) so hopefully I don't need a new one. I will report back soon when I can drive it.
