So before I bought this car last week, the previous owner was getting "P0455 Evap System Leak Detected Large Leak" OBDII error. He took it to a shop, the mechanic replaced the vapor canister.

In less than 300 miles the MIL is back on and the same code is present.
Another thing. If I fill the tank till the pump clicks off, I get a strong smell of gasoline vapor in the car. Actually the smell has been diminishing but is still present.

I called the shop that did the work, he says to bring it in and they do a smoke test. The mechanic says not to fill these cars to the top or you will smell gas in the car. It's $80 for the test and then I think $80/hr to fix it. The $80 test fee goes towards the repair if I use him for the repair.

Is the mechanic just blowing smoke?? 😒

 

Is maybe the filler neck loose?

 

Not sure about your code but the smell may be this:
There is a seal on the fuel level sensor in the top of the gas tank
If you put more gas in after the pump shuts off you will be overfilling the gas tank and the gas can leak out of the seal allowing gas to run on the top and sides of the gas tank
The gas tank is located in the bulkhead wall right behind your seats

 

I don't continue to add fuel. I've only filled it once. I've only put a little over 300 miles on it so far.

 

There is a valve operated by float that shuts when the fuel raises the float, this causes the fill tube to back up for a second shutting off the gas flow. If you try to fill more the tank will not take it as there is air/vapour trapped above the shut off valve.
If the shut off valve sticks open the gas will fill the tank and when the vapour valve opens gas will get into the charcoal canister and be sucked into the engine instead of just gas vapour. If the seal is faulty on the fuel level seal a gas smell will always be obvious.
A large leak could be at the fill tube or in the hoses to and from the vapour release solenoids. A guess would be that the charcoal cylinder is filled with gas again.
Cheapest error to fix is a faulty gas cap.
That’s the way I understand it anyway.

 

Thanks for the comments. I've only filled the tank once, and I didn't keep trying to put fuel in after it clicked off.

 

The fact you getr the 455 AND smell gas tells me you have a major leak/venting going on. I'd agree with the idea that the seal around the sensor wiring connector is suspect (and EASY to check).

Roadsters tend to be vented in that area better than a coupe, you do not indicated what model of car we are talking about, so you are getting guesses.

 

Smoke test will tell you what is going on.

So I thought I'd update for those interested. The code P0455 Evap System Leak Detected has went away. I cleared the MIL through my ODBII software and I have successfully drive cycled the car plus a few hundred miles or so. The code is gone, no pending code.

I still have a strong smell of gas when I let the windows down or when I first get in the car. It must be a leak and some have suggested the seal around where the pump wires feed into the tank. I don't know where to look for that.

I've never owned a coupe, I'd assume you tear the trim out of the trunk area and there it is.
